Teeth Sensitivity: Stop the Pain

October 19, 2008 By alex 1 Comment

What Is Teeth Sensitivity

Teeth sensitivity is a condition where the teeth are having discomfort when you eat something hot, cold, or too sour foods. This can result to a sharp sting or pain on the nerves of your teeth that lasts for hours. You will not be able to enjoy your food or you can even lose your appetite.

Almost 20% of adults from age 20 up are suffering from teeth sensitivity. This is considered to be the most common dental problem. In most cases, the canines and premolars are the ones affected.

Teeth sensitivity starts when the dentin or the lower part of the teeth which is being covered by gum tissue became exposed. Gum recession is the main factor that causes dentin exposure making the teeth sensitive. The roots of the teeth are not covered by enamel. The roots contain lots of small tubules that enable the stimuli to reach the nerve endings causing pain.

Teeth Sensitivity Causes

There are many different causes of teeth sensitivity. Improper brushing method or technique is the most common cause of teeth sensitivity. Brushing too hard, using a toothbrush with hard bristles, or excessive brushing can wear away the enamel layer and can cause gum recession. This will lead to dentin exposure.

Gum diseases like gingivitis can result to gum inflammation and can destroy ligaments that support the covering of the roots of the teeth.

Cracks between teeth can be filled with plaque. Bacteria from plaque can build up and cause inflammation, sensitivity, and other diseases.

Teeth whitening procedures, either done by your dentist or done at home, can contribute a lot in teeth sensitivity. The gel containing high concentration of peroxide that is being used in these procedures damages the enamel.

Mouthwash and foods with high acid contents can also damage the enamel and can worsen the sensitivity. It would be better if you will use a fluoridated mouthwash to prevent teeth sensitivity.

Other dental procedures like tooth cleaning and restoration when done regularly can also cause teeth sensitivity.

Prevent Or Reduce Teeth Sensitivity

There are things you can do to prevent or reduce teeth sensitivity. The most important is maintaining a good oral hygiene. Don’t forget to brush and floss your teeth regularly to get rid of mouth bacteria and keep your whole mouth clean.

Opt for a toothbrush with soft bristles and brush your teeth gently with the proper technique. Try to avoid brushing too hard especially on the gum line to prevent recession.

Use toothpaste especially made for sensitive teeth. Try products that contain potassium nitrate. This is the kind of toothpaste most dentists recommend to their patients with sensitive teeth problems. There are lots of products out in the market today that can reduce sensitivity.

Avoiding acidic foods and beverages can also help in reducing teeth sensitivity. Avoid grinding your teeth because this can lead to enamel erosion. Lastly, visit your dentist regularly every 6 months. Your dentist can provide you with the right information and can suggest the right kind and brand of dental products you should use and can work best for you.
