The dental plans typically represent the next best alternative to more expensive insurance. You only need to pay a fixed monthly/annual fee for the membership, and then you will have access to a great variety of dental treatments on a discounted cost.
Dental care is extremely expensive, especially if you do not have a good coverage insurance, so opting for one of the many dental plans available would be the best solution. Dental plans start at as little as $10 per month for an individual, and can go as high as $60 or $70 for family coverage. You can easily perform online comparison shopping in order to find the best plan that suits your needs but also your available budget.
Dental Health Maintenance Organization Plans (Dental HMOs)
In order to have access to discounted dental care through an HMO plan, you will need to pay a monthly insurance premium plus the co-payment when you visit the dental office. Most of the HMO plan providers will charge an initial startup fee, and these types of plans offer preventative dental care for free. There is a certain list of participating dentists that you must choose from, and the general cost of such a plan per individual is about $10 to $15. Be careful however, because there is an annual maximum limit that comes with these types of plans.
The Dental Indemnity Insurance plan
You have got the freedom to choose your own preferred dentist, but the deductibles are a little bit higher with the dental indemnity insurance plan. Research for a dental indemnity insurance plan that does not require you to pay any deductible for routine or preventative dental care treatments. These plans offer coverage as follows:
-100% coverage preventative/basic dental care treatments (oral checkups, professional dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, etc.)
-80% coverage for basic restorative dental care
-50% coverage for the more major dental care treatments such as dental crowns, bridges or dentures
-once you sign up for the dental indemnity insurance plan, you can also have a special add-on to the policy which offers certain discounts for orthodontic care (dental braces)
Individual dental indemnity insurance plans cost between $25 and up to $40 (depending on the inclusions, coverage limits).
The Dental Discount plans
The dental discount plan is not insurance, but it is a discount card which offers you access to cheaper dental treatments. There will be a network of dentists that you must choose from. These are basically dentists/dental offices who participate in the program of the provider. Dentists within the network agree to charge a reduced rate for certain dental treatment. The sole requirement is that you pay the membership fee for the dental discount plan. Per month, expect to pay anything between $10 and $20. Research well, and buy annual membership for the dental discount plan because that is much cheaper (about $70 to $85 per year/individual). The discounts offered through this card range between 10% and up to 60% on a wide range of dental treatments from cleanings and up to dental braces and even dental implants at times.
