Wisdom tooth extractions became more popular procedures since it was proved that usually it’s more convenient than let them develop. Third molars are more difficult to take care of, they may damage other healthy teeth. Besides, older you are longer the recovery time will be. That’s why it’s recommended to get rid of wisdom teeth while being young.

Generally speaking there is no real use in wisdom teeth. They create problems more often than help a person to survive. Wisdom tooth extraction is performed to correct an actual problem or to prevent any future, possible problems. One of these is strongly connected with the jaw dimensions. If it’s not large enough then the tooth may become impacted and unable to break through your gums.

An impacted tooth can develop infection, damage other teeth and bone, or a cyst. In these cases wisdom tooth extraction is absolutely necessary. It is also used in cases when the wisdom tooth comes in at an awkward angle, with the top of its facing forward, backward, or to either side.

In case of partial breaking through, food and germs can get trapped under the created flap of gum tissue making it become red, swollen, and painful. These are the first symptoms of infection invasion. Permanent careful cleaning will be useless until the wisdom tooth extraction is applied instead.

So, a tooth extraction will be really useful and needed if you have or want to prevent crowding of the back teeth, having your gums red, swollen and causing pain. It will be helpful in case of possible, and usually difficult to treat, tooth decay and gum disease, or to prevent having the wisdom tooth stuck in the jaw.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Procedure

Wisdom tooth extractions are usually made in a dentist’s or dental surgeon’s office. The doctor will use a local anesthetic. However, a general anesthetic may be used instead. In this case you’ll be asked not to eat or drink anything in the night before the surgery procedure day.

Before the tooth extraction your gum tissue will be opened up. Then any bone that is covering the tooth will be taken out. Sometimes it’s necessary to cut the tooth into smaller pieces, in order to make its removal easier, as well as to separate the bone tissue from the tooth that it’s connected to.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Recovery, Aftercare

After the wisdom tooth extraction you may have some of the following symptoms: bleeding, swelling, pain, and skin discoloration. As for complications, there are widely met the dry socket, that appears when a blood clot has failed to form or has been dislodged later, and paresthesia, the inability to feel the tongue, lip, or chin as a result of damaging the nearby nerve.

Wisdom tooth extraction recovery includes some simple requests that will make you feel better: to bite gently and careful, to sleep only on a pillow, to apply ice pack the first 24 hours, not to do physical effort, to try to relax, and to avoid solid foods. In fact you won’t be able to eat them the first several days, so, enjoy a thin soup or a pudding.

After tooth extraction care also involves renouncing to straw because it is harmful the first period of time, as well as smoking process. You may rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day to reduce swelling and pain, too. However, wisdom tooth extraction recovery should anyway include teeth brushing but, a careful one.

Cost of wisdom tooth extraction depends on the complexity of the dentist’s work that must be done. For a simple tooth extraction you’ll pay about $175, classified as a soft tissue implication. In case of bone impacting the cost of wisdom tooth extraction will be twice higher, usually about $330.

In fact, you may never have problems with wisdom teeth. If they haven’t created you problems until you were 25 to 30 years old then there is a big probability that they won’t create you any and after this age. But remember that after the age of 25 the wisdom teeth roots are finally developed and very difficult to extract. The recovery period of time will increase twice and more.

Even if the overall chance of dangerous complications is less than 2%, you can have really bad consequences if not to treat your wisdom tooth in time or to prevent possible troubles. In any case, the chose is yours, so be careful before telling your dentist the last decision.

  1. I was just glad that I had mine extracted recently after being in agony for more than 2 years. I could only wish I had it done and over with earlier. Now I feel so much better and I don’t have to worry about it getting infected and affecting the 2nd molar next to it. My main concern back then was the cost of the extraction. But luckily this time round I was able to get the surgery covered through sort of an insurance scheme in my country. Still paying with my money though, just that I did not have to fork out the cash. I was previously also scared by the many horror stories I heard about the drilling. End of the day, it wasn’t even half as frightening as it sounded.

  2. is it normal for the gum to bleed for 3 days after the wisdom teeth extraction? thanks susan
