How to Get Used to Wearing Dentures
Dentures represent a very popular choice for most people who struggle with missing teeth, mainly because these are also quite an affordable option.
However, the greatest majority of the patients have a hard time getting used to wearing these dentures, so read below to find out a few useful tips which will help you adjust to the changes much faster.
Reading out loud
Many dental professionals advise new denture wearers to start reading a newspaper out loud in front of the mirror.
This way, you will be able to check out if the dentures are discomforting to you after “talking” for a longer period. If there is persistent discomfort present, do not hesitate to contact your dentist for adjustments.
Practicing certain sounds
Professionals say that new denture wearers should practice saying out loud the numbers 33, 66 and 55. These sounds take a considerable effort to be spelled, and by practicing with these you will be able to see if there are any problems with your speech because of the dentures.
At first you might find it difficult to pronounce these numbers, but after a period it will get easier and easier.
During the first few days of wearing your dentures, you might notice that you salivate excessively.
This is so, mainly because your mouth considers the dentures as a foreign matter, such as “food” and more saliva is thus produced. You should start consuming sugar free mints, because this habit will help reducing salivation.
After a few hours of having your dentures, you will want to get them out. It is important to keep the dentures in your mouth even if this is uncomfortable at first. You need to give your gums and your entire mouth the chance to get used to the foreign object.
If you will skip wearing the dentures for even several days, your gums might heal in an improper way, and you will find that the dentures are ill fitting. Just give it a couple of weeks, and you will get used to wearing them.
