Wearing Dental Braces: Painful or Not?

Right before wearing braces for the first time, people are generally reluctant to have them attached to the teeth and they ask themselves whether braces do cause discomfort or pain. The truth is that when a set of braces are fitted to the teeth, they are not causing a huge degree of pain.

Right before wearing dental braces for the first time, people are generally reluctant to have them attached to the teeth and they ask themselves whether teeth braces do cause discomfort or pain.

The truth is that when a set of dental braces are fitted to the teeth, they are not causing a huge degree of pain. Certainly there will be a certain level of slight discomfort, and a mild soreness present especially after the wire is being placed into the brackets.

It is important to remember that if this is the first time you have to wear dental braces, this will be a totally new sensation for you. Therefore, you need to give it a little time and allow your mouth and teeth to get used to the new adjustments.

In the first few hours after the teeth braces have been fitted you might find it difficult to chew on the meals. With a little patience and some practice you will quickly get used to these changes, and you will be able to eat just about any food you used to consume even before having the dental braces fitted.

Especially in the first period of wearing teeth braces, you should change your diet to a more liquid based one if possible. For instance, consume fresh and nutritious shakes, yogurt which is filled with Calcium, soups, and mashed potatoes which are very easy to consume.

This schedule should be respected only for the first few days after the dental braces have been fitted; then slowly you can switch back to your regular diet.

Up until you have to go for you first wire adjustment at the orthodontist you might have such discomfort sensation in the mouth. Also, it is not only the teeth that have to get used to the new adjustments, but also your lips and your cheek.

When you wear dental braces the entire internal structure of the mouth is modified, so you really need to allow some time for your mouth to get used with the changes. The wires and the technology in general that is used for the making of the braces are extremely special nowadays.

Only lightweight, flexible materials are used so that teeth braces will cause the smallest degree of pain or discomfort for the dental patient.

Pain and discomfort caused by wearing dental braces can always be alleviated with over the counter medicine, such as Motrin/Advil. Moreover, the patients are many times advised to rinse their mouth with water to which they add a teaspoon of salt.

This will also help in easing the discomfort caused by dental braces. Patients should rinse the mouth with this mixture at least 4 times every day.

Then, there is also the orthodontic wax available which will also greatly help reducing the pain or discomfort caused by the braces that irritate the inside of the cheeks or lips.

Chewing gum, believe it or not is also a good remedy for when you have to put up with wearing braces that feel uncomfortable. By chewing on the gum, the blood flow to the structures surrounding the teeth is increased. Thus, discomfort and soreness will be efficiently reduced.
