People will spend hours at the gym to keep their bodies fit and healthy, but when it comes to oral health, even 3 minutes of tooth brushing feels like an eternity. Yet, everyone wants a great smile with gleaming white teeth with no effort at all.

In fact, teeth whitening is not all there is to a great smile; maintaining excellent oral hygiene overall should be the main aim. Dental health is very important and it is easy to achieve too.

The question is a real cliché, but it must be asked: do you brush after every meal? Most likely, the answer would be “No”.

Brushing after you eat actually is very important to good dental health as it removes small food particles from your teeth, preventing bacteria from feasting on it. Dental hygienists usually recommend brushing your teeth after every meal, and even after snacking.

When we talk about brushing teeth, most of us tend to forget that the tongue is home to around 50% of the bacteria found in the mouth. If you have bad breath, then an overgrowth of bacteria on your tongue could be a possible reason for it.

Therefore, it is advisable to use a good tongue scraper to clean away the microbes that cause bad breath. However, it might also be wise to get a complete medical check-up, as bad breath can sometimes be indicative of more serious health problems.

It also pays to remember that your toothbrush cannot reach every corner in your mouth. The small gaps between teeth can only be cleaned with floss, so do this at least once a day. However, children may inadvertently hurt their gums while doing so, so it would be better to wait until they are a bit older before getting them started on the habit.

Most of us shy away from visiting the dentist until a tooth decay problem becomes worse. Many people tend to think that nursing a decayed tooth is better than getting a dental implant.

However, the truth is that, whether you call them dental plants or dental implants, these things are mean to save your teeth, as the decay from one tooth can spread to adjacent areas. Periodic visits to the dentist are a must if you intend to keep your teeth healthy and strong.

It’s important to take care of your dental health. Selecting a suitable toothbrush, practising good tooth-brushing habits, visiting a dentist and hygienist regularly, and avoiding tobacco and too much tea or coffee are some of the things you can do to keep all of your own teeth.
