You might be surprised to learn just how quickly and comfortably your smile can be transformed.
The first step before starting smile makeover is a complete and thorough examination by your cosmetic dentist to determine your oral health. Any dental health issues such as caries or gum disease will be addressed and corrected before any cosmetic work begins.
To complete your smile makeover, your cosmetic dentist will develop dental treatment plan customized to meet your aesthetic goals. A smile makeover to one person could mean something very different to another person and it is a completely individual choice.
This dental cosmetic treatment plan may consist of many cosmetic and functionally restorative procedures, potentially including orthodontics, teeth whitening, dental bonding, dental veneers, dental crowns, oral maxillofacial surgery, and gummy smile reduction. A smile makeover involves one or more cosmetic dental or facial rejuvenation procedures to improve the aesthetics of your smile in a way that you want.
In all smile makeover cases, gum tissue provides not only the aesthetic framework but is the foundation that will hold your teeth and all the restorative dental work (dental crown, dental bridge, dental veneers).
Smile makover treatments may be supplemented with a combination of root canal treatment, dental braces (orthodontics), and periodontal (gum) surgery.
Your dental cosmetic procedure of smile makeover will be determined by type of procedures required to enhance your smile. It may be as simple as one-hour smile teeth whitening. You may chose to place porcelain veneers on your teeth to create a white smile and straight teeth.
There are no known complications associated with a smile makeover as long as you take care of your oral hygiene.

I agree, a smile makeover can significantly improve a person’s life. It’s amazing the boost in confidence a great smile can generate. Unfortunately, for many people, the cost of a smile makeover is prohibitive.
I agree as well, many of my patients not only undergo a complete transformation of their smile but the impact on their self-confidence and personal life is tremendous. Usually prior to treatment my gummy smile patients do not feel comfortable smiling–they cover their mouth to hide the “gumminess” of their smiles, and this causes them to supress their emotions. After treatment, however, the difference is huge. Patients are often surprised by how truly happy they become when can express their emotions more naturally with a beautiful, proportionate smile.
I agree in part with Cory, the cost of a makeover IS expensive. But people spend $$$ on things that don’t even last 5 years – they’re men and they buy cars! A makeover properly done will give you YEARS of use and, more importantly, years of confidence. Perhaps people should look at their priorities and finance these things.
Dr Tan,
That’s a great point. The world would be a better place if people followed your advice. Unfortunately, I think it’ll be awhile before we see a priority shift.
i just had to say that not everyone is able to make their teeth a priority.
my teeth are terrible and i hate them, i have a very gummy smile and my front teeth face to one side rather than to the front. i avoid cameras at all cost, i even ruined my wedding photos trying to hide my teeth!
now i would love to have them fixed but for people like me this is never likely to happen, i would never be able to finance it! and not down to having my priorities wrong either! we are a young family, my husband works hard full time to support us all and keep a roof over our heads, there is no money left for luxurys, we dont own a car either.
ive been so depressed about my awful smile i rarely go out socially and dont have the confidence to go to interviews ect. ive even been tempted lately to take the pliers to them! so it is not always about spending money in the wrong place, or having priorities in the wrong place.
my priority is my family and my babies not going without,
so i guess ill just have to be ugly forever lol
Liane, I understand your situation and the hardship that results when people are dissatisfied with their smile. I thought you might like to know that there are ultra low cost solutions for people that need care but can’t afford traditional venues. If you are looking for care on a very tight budget one idea might be to call local universities that have dental programs. Many of them often have low cost clinics.
When I was 17 years old, I fell asleep at the wheel of my car and crashed into a truck. On impact My face slammed into the steering wheel and knocked out many of my bottom teeth. I didn’t exactly have a perfect smile before that, but it was disheartening having to wear dentures at 17 years old. Since that time, I have dealt with depression as I have lost more teeth and those that remained have become so misaligned that my my mouth is even crooked when I talk in order to hide how bad it looks. It had made it impossible for me to date since my divorce 12 years ago … I rarely go out … It has hurt me professionally … it has even made it difficult for me to find a (shared) place to live when relocating to a new city.
Lately I have been dealing with a lot of depression. Were it not for a demanding job and love of tennis, I’m not sure where I would be. All I know is that the only thing more hideous than my smile, is my smile without my partial denture. I suppose it’s easy to say “make it a priority” and finance it, but what about people like me without great credit? What do we do? I’ve looked at all sorts of options including bartering my professional services for dental care. I feel trapped and fear that I might live the rest of my life in this purgatory.
I am a 48 year old recovering meth addict . my teeth are in bad shape and starting to hurt. I do not have the money to fix my teeth and I have been looking for some program that can help me with my teeth. I have not been able to smile for years. It is hard to eat some times due to the pain. Is their any one that can help me with getting my teeth fixed ?
In response to the suggestion to try local universities, they are even expensive these days. My fiance and I have all of our money in student loams. Every penny I take home goes toward bills, sometimes I cannot even afford food for a week. In these cases I have to borrow off family. We are working ourselves to the bone, and my teeth are terrible. There are more cavities than I can count, and my wisdom teeth have grown in (sideways). I also have several crooked teeth. I haven’t been able to afford dental care for years, and I am paying the price. Does anyone have any legitimate suggestions for a person in my tough scenario? I really could use some help. So could my fiance. his teeth are not getting any better over time either.
