What Parents Should Know Before Taking the Child to the Dentist
In most of the cases, when you take your child to the dentist, he/she will take it as a traumatic experience. You, as a parent, can truly make that go away, and even if a visit to the dentist’s is not”pleasant”, it will not be “traumatic” either.
In most of the cases, when you take your child to the dentist, he/she will take it as a traumatic experience.
You, as a parent, can truly make that go away, and even if a visit to the dentist’s is not”pleasant”, it will not be “traumatic” either.
Remember that you as a parent, must prepare your child before taking him to the dentist, especially if this is the first time, or if they will have to go through a more complicated dental procedure, other than dental cleaning or fluoride treatment (such as an extraction, a filling, etc.).
Here are some of the golden guiding rules that will help you prepare your little one:
- If you don’t know how to do it, and if you yourself feel a little scared, pay a visit to the dental office in prior. The team of professionals there will be able to offer you some very good suggestions and even important reading material where you will most definitely find answers to your questions on what to tell your kid before taking him to the dentist.
- Make sure that at the time of the appointment your child is not hungry or tired. A child who is both tired and hungry will not communicate and cooperate too well. It is a good idea to offer your child a healthy snack that will cheer him up, right before the appointment.
- If you can’t handle to see your little one getting dental treatment, than stay away from the treatment area. It is better to wait outside so that the dentist won’t have to keep an eye on you because you are so pale you are on the verge of fainting. The safest thing to do, is to let the doctor perform his/her job by treating the child, and you should nicely read a magazine (or at least pretend to read it!) in the waiting room.
- It is not a good idea to tell your child about how you were treated at the dentist when you were young. Dental technology has changed at least 10 times since then, tools and instruments have gotten more special, and “pain” is eliminated from the dental office for good.
- Sadly, there are a few parents who will use the phrase “I’ll take you to the dentist if you don’t sit still”…This is an extremely bad idea, because all you will manage to do is implant the fear and terror of dentist even more in your child’s head. Anything else, just don’t use threats which contain the words hospital, doctor, dentist, if you want your little one to grow up with a healthy notion of what “health” means and how important it is to get treatment in time.
Often times it happens that this fear is actually in you, and not in your child. Take him to the dentist, and you will see that there were no tears and screams…and then perhaps it is time you get yourself an appointment too!
