First of all, the dental veneers are thin sheets of porcelain that are applied onto the outer surface of the tooth.
The dental veneers can hide imperfections such as stained teeth, slightly crooked teeth, discolored teeth and other. Now, there are two major types of dental veneers available:
- the preparation veneers
- the non preparation veneers
Differentiation of Dental veneers, pros & cons of each
The preparation veneers, are the regular porcelain dental veneers. In order to apply them, your dentist will remove parts of the enamel of the tooth, and maybe file down the teeth in order for the veneers to fit naturally.
Also, in order for the veneer to adhere perfectly to the surface of your teeth, the dentist will remove a layer of enamel. Many patients are quite scared about this procedure, but otherwise the dental veneers cannot be fitted well.
One very important thing you need to keep in mind is that you should find yourself a very highly trained and skilled cosmetic dentist who performs dental veneers treatments.
He will explain to you that he is going to try to preserve as much as possible from your natural teeth, so you should not worry that your teeth will be filed down excessively.
Even like this, the regular dental veneers type of treatment is not reversible. The veneers cannot be just removed and you return back to your old smile, because the structure of your teeth is already modified.
The second type of veneers are the Lumineers, and these are the no preparation veneers.
This means that the dentist will not need to make almost any modification to your natural teeth, but the veneers can be applied right onto the surface of a very slightly modified/filed tooth.
From this respect, the Lumineers treatment is a reversible type of treatment. The Lumineers will not need preparing because they are made of an extremely thin sheet of porcelain-one of the downsides is that the Lumineers can crack and chip much easier, because they are fragile.
The Lumineers will give perfect results, only if you are lucky enough to find an excellent ceramist and a very highly skilled cosmetic dentist to perform the treatment.
The greatest majority of experts in the dental field agree that the traditional, preparation dental veneers will give the most perfect results because:
- they will look and feel more natural than the Lumineers
- the porcelain veneers can block out even the darkest teeth, while Lumineers may be a little transparent
- the porcelain veneers create the most beautiful and natural contour at the gumline
- the traditional veneers simply fit much better
- porcelain veneers are perfect even when only a few teeth need to be covered. On the other hand, Lumineers can work properly only if at least 8 or 10 teeth need to be transformed
