Dental Implants in One Day – Is This Really Possible?
Dental implant technology has come a long ways since the 1960s.
Dental implant procedure involves replacing either a single tooth or a set of teeth with an artificial replacement called a prosthetic crown.
While this used to be a timely process, the sophistication of computer-aided technology and advanced knowledge in bone grafting, same day dental implants have become a reality. While it would be great to receive your dental implants on the same day, it can be expensive.
What are Dental Implants?
Tooth implants are embedded into the jaw so they will move and adjust with it the same way as natural teeth do.
Before today’s technology, patients once needed to wait for the bone grafting to complete before the dentist would attach the artificial tooth. Sometimes the wait would require three to six months.
But in the last decade, the technology dentists use have made great strides, helping change the lives of many people who are now smiling again. No one wants to have a missing tooth or multiple teeth — it absolutely kills their self confidence. Dental implants are a safe and the best solution.
Dental implants are also a great alternative to wearing dentures. Dentures are made of acrylic, cast metal and flexible plastic for the base and plastic or porcelain for the actual teeth. Dental implants are significantly stronger, being made of titanium.
More importantly, though, dental implants feel more comfortable when compared to dentures. Dentures can move around and even make clicking sounds while eating or speaking. Dental implants are very stable and feel like natural teeth, allowing people to chew and speak efficiently.
Why You Can Have Same Day Dental Implants
Now, under the right conditions, dental implants can include the extraction, placement of grafting material, and installation of the prosthetic crown in one appointment. This procedure is also called immediate-load implantation.
When the dentist extracts the tooth, they place the grafting material inside immediately. The implant can then be installed in only one-step if the patient has enough of healthy jawbone that is free of disease.
Though it will still take time for the bone to grow and completely adopt the implant, the patient is able to have the prosthetic in place during this process. This allows patients to benefit from the cosmetic impact of dental implants immediately.
Once the bone has grown around the implant, the process is complete, and the prosthetic can be used for normal biting and chewing. The implants will be held strong and naturally in the jaw just as real teeth are.
How long is the total process?
How long a body takes to grow bone around the implant is influenced by the patient’s age, jawbone density, and health. Same day implants have become much more popular in recent years, with thousands of procedures performed in the United States every year.
Most dental implants are highly successful, with a success rate of more than 90 percent. At this time, only patients with adequate bone density are ideal for same day dental implants.
