Cosmetic dentistry can be defined as either dental or skeletal. Skeletal changes may be done by oral surgery, which changes the location of the jaws.

Changes in the dental structure can be made in moving, removing, or adding teeth. The normal materials that are used to add to the teeth in order to fix their appearance are porcelain, a tooth colored plastic, or bonding.

The removal of tooth structure is accomplished by a drill. When there is a small amount of a tooth to be extracted, it is simply reshaped or sculpted.

If it is necessary to extract a larger amount of tooth, porcelain is added in a newly created location. The relocation of teeth is accomplished through the use of braces, which may be either removable or fixed.

Reconstructive Dentistry

Reconstructive dentistry is defined as any severe reshaping of the mouth. This is usually accomplished through the use of metal or porcelain. Reconstructive dentistry is usually needed by people who have been in an accident, have severe gum disease, or have many cavities that are considered dangerous.

Frequently, reconstructive dentistry is made up of all of the specialties in dentistry including root canal therapy, multiple crowns, dental implants, oral surgery, braces, or gum therapy.

Initially, reconstructions are designed to repair the damage and to stop the advancement of active disease. The placement of the final porcelain bridges frequently begins 6 to 12 weeks after the surgery. The patient must understand that reconstructed teeth require frequent maintenance and cleaning.

Implant Dentistry

An artificial tooth root is known as a dental implant. Its purpose is to attach the existing jawbone to the artificial teeth. The jawbone can be considered a piece of wood and a dental implant can be considered a screw. The screw could then be inserted at half its length into the piece of wood, and an artificial tooth is secured to the area that is exposed with the screw which is projected over the wood.

The tooth must be connected firmly to the screw, which should also be firmly attached in the piece of wood. One dental implant may be used for a single extracted tooth. As many as 8 dental implants may be used in a jaw that has the majority of the teeth missing.

In order to use a dental implant there must be an adequate amount of bone that is free from infection. If there are other circumstances the first thing that is necessary are either to make additional bone for implantation or to treat existing disease. This is true, for instance, in the case of nasal sinus elevation or bone ridge augmentation. The surgery that is required to put the dental implants themselves in is very similar to that of tooth removal.
