Many people have at least one thing that they’d like to change with regards to their teeth. Maybe they are stained, chipped, or crooked. There are many cases in which these individuals can achieve the results they want by means of cosmetic dentistry options including porcelain veneers and teeth whitening.

Teeth Whitening

The whitening of teeth is a process which lightens the discoloration of the dentine and the enamel.

Types of Teeth Whitening

There are two primary kinds of whitening treatment available:

  • Laser whitening is done in the dentist’s office and only takes about 90 minutes.
  • Home whitening is done in your own time at home and takes about 1 hour each day for a period of 10 to 14 days.

Tooth Discoloration

There are numerous reasons why a tooth will discolor. Usually, tooth discoloration is the result of smoking tobacco, and drinking red wine, and coffee. However, the most reason for tooth discoloration is ageing. Yet another reason for tooth discoloration is nerve degeneration.

Who Benefit From Teeth Whitening

Nearly everyone will benefit from teeth whitening. However, don’t forget that those people who have veneers, porcelains, or old fillings will not respond to the whitening process. For this problem you need a professional who specializes in cosmetic dentistry. He will be able to tell you if whitening is a viable option for you.

How Teeth Whitening Works

The treatment uses a whitening gel that releases oxygen when it is placed next to the surface of the teeth. As the oxygen goes into the dentine and the enamel, it lightens the color of the substances. The structure of the teeth stays unchanged and only the color of the teeth is lightened.

Porcelain Veneers

A porcelain veneer will protect a tooth that has been damaged and improve the aesthetics of a tooth. Basically, it is a layer of material that is placed over a tooth’s surface. There are two primary kinds of materials that are used to make a veneer and they are dental porcelain and a composite material.

Combining Porcelain Veneers and Whitening

There are some cases in which a combination porcelain veneers, home whitening, and laser whitening may be a good way to stay on your budget. That way, only the teeth that are causing you a problem would have to have veneers that are made of porcelain. In the first place a cosmetic dentist will lighten your teeth with laser whitening in the office and also provide you with a home whitening kit to use so that your teeth will go to the lightest shade that is possible. Then, the teeth would be prepared for the porcelain veneers that will be made to match your new whiter color.
