One third of Americans is without dental insurance. The lack of affordable dental insurance for poor people is revealed as serious risks for dental and overall health. Residents of Las Vegas asked questions about healthcare reform and dental care to President Obama at Nevada town hall meeting Friday.
Several programs give free dental care to children, but adults are often missed. Dentists will provide free dental care to uninsured and low-income adults and children, as a part of an effort to raise awareness about the importance of dental health during Dental Health Month in February.
In celebration of National Children’s Dental Health Month, dentists will be providing dental care to children who are uninsured and do not regularly see a dentist. More than two dozen dentists throughout the county opened their office doors Friday to low-income children and adults to provide free services and education.

As the nation begins to focus its attention on the prospects of major health care reforms, one important aspect of health must not be overlooked — access to affordable dental care for children. If left untreated, tooth decay in childhood can lead to lifelong tooth and gum problems, hospitalizations and emergency room visits, delayed physical development and loss of school days.
