Hundreds of children spent time on Friday in the chair saying “ahh” as local dentists, hygienists and students tried to take a bite out of a growing problem of not enough tooth and gum care for many young people. Friday was the 8th annual Give Kids a Smile Day from the American Dental Association. Free dental care was provided for more than 320,000 uninsured children between the ages of 3 and 12 nation wide.
Give Kids a Smile is the part of February’s National Children’s Dental Health Month. Many kids are not being taught the proper way to care for their teeth. A number of teens in US have never been to the dentist. Dentists are making efforts to change that by providing free dental services.
Second and third grade students at Lincoln Elementary School will receive free oral health care courtesy of area dentists. Participating children will receive a free dental exam, sealants and fluoride treatments.
The New Jersey Dental Association (NJDA) will host the national Give Kids a Smile! (GKAS) Children’s Dental Access Day for the 8th year on Friday, February 5, 2010, at more than 80 participating locations around the state. On this day, thousands of children 12 and under will have access to free dental care at any of the participating locations, and it couldn’t happen at a more crucial time.
