When you think of New York, you think of movie stars, cosmopolitan gatherings, luxury… nobody would think that the Health Department actually releases statistics according to which the citizens do not care about their oral heath.
The pearly whites are not so important to the citizens of New York, and this is a statement of the Department of Health.
This Thursday, there has been released a report according to which about 60% of the adults are at a quite big risk of developing oral health complications.
Moreover, the statistics reveal that more than 1/3 of the children from Gotham under 8 years of age, do struggle at least with an untreated dental decay.
This report comes to put the blame on the too many sugary foods and drinks that both adults and children have easy access to. A few weeks ago, Michael Bloomberg has announced that there will come a new plan in force, which will put a limit regarding the amount of sugary juices and sodas sold throughout the city.
If people cannot have access to an unlimited amount of such sugary health destroyers, they will stay healthier.
According to Thomas Farley who is a health commissioner, these statistics are quite worrying, mainly because oral health complications can be easily prevented. In a statement released earlier, he said that people should just pay more attention to their daily oral health regimen.
They should make sure to brush their teeth twice a day, drink from the tap water which is fluoridated to protect the gums, and don’t forget about the wonder floss to eliminate bacteria and particles from the surface of the tooth.
The people are the ones who are also blamed for not taking care of their teeth. Even those who come from low income families, should research for dental health programs that are specifically tailored for them.
These programs do not offer cosmetic dentistry treatments, but they offer basic dental care to keep the teeth healthy. There is also quite a clear link between the exaggerated consumption of sugary drinks of all kinds and the poor state of the oral health of both adults and children. So perhaps the plan to limit the sale of such harmful drinks is a good idea after all.
