Proper Dental Health from the Inside Out

Most often, dental health is being assured by the work of the dentist: fillings, crowns, professional whitening, and of course by everyday regular home hygiene (brushing, flossing, etc.).

However, according to Dr. Frank Eggleston, there is an “internal smile” existent, and the beauty of that smile is given by what we eat. If you eat properly, your smile is going to be bright and beautiful too.

Dr. Eggleston graduated in 1970 from the dental school of the Baylor University, and his main focus in the last year was the role of nutrition in proper oral health.

On May the 2nd he gave a free lecture on the subject at the Hilton Garden Inn (Gillespie Center).

He is also the president of the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry.

Eggleston states that our internal smiles are basically much more important than our external smiles. Furthermore, he tells that our entire body is a dynamic system, constantly changing:

  • Every four months the body replaces a thigh muscle
  • Almost every four months, our blood cells are replaced
  • Every two years, the backbone is replaced
  • Every day our taste buds are changing

Therefore, if we choose to put good things (nutrients and food) in our system, we will help it grow healthily. New cells are being built every day in our system. In order to replace successfully the bones in our face, we need more Calcium intake which is a very important mineral that helps building a healthy bone structure.

Then, we need Vitamin C intake in order to have healthy gums. If people eat more fruits and vegetables, and if they respect the fact that eating healthy foods is important, they will grow healthy nerves, bones and gums.

When people come to the dentist, they actually come to fix things externally, while they forget that with proper nutrition healing processes are faster and staying healthy on the outside will be much easier.

In several universities nationwide there have been introduced courses on nutrition in dental schools – for example, at the University of Texas dental school in Texas.
