In order to have a good dental health, early detection and prevention are two of the most important factors.

You can avoid the apparition of dental caries, gum disease or other oral health complications, if you take on the following good practices:

  • Avoid smoking
  • Brush and floss regularly your teeth
  • Stick to a healthy diet
  • Go on regular dental checkups even if you are a denture wearer

According to the president of the British Columbia Dental Association, Dr. Bruce Ward, it is many times the case that symptoms do not show only when the disease is in a progressed state.

In order to prevent negative impacts on the general health, it is very important to detect early the dental disease.

Unfortunately, many people choose to pay a visit to the dentist only when they feel pain or swelling has already appeared.

Educating yourself in oral health is also important; talking to your doctor about your symptoms and learning facts about your diagnosis will help you get a better understanding of the importance of a good dental hygiene.

Remember to review your dental plan coverage that has been provided by your employer. Many times, these plans do not offer enough coverage, so you need to know what your options are in time.

During dental health examinations, these are the main factors that your doctor will consider:

  • Your medical history that is very important indicator of what may have caused your current dental problem (for example, medications you have been using)
  • You might need to take a dental x-ray that will give an insight of what is going on in the interior of your teeth or gums
  • Examination of your gums for possible infections, swellings, etc.
  • Examination of your teeth to find possible caries (including examining the prosthetic teeth)
  • Any other dental works will be examined as well (such as crowns and fillings)
  • Examining the level of plaque and tartar on teeth
  • Examination of the soft tissue (lips and tongue) in order to check for sensitivities or other possible oral health complications
