How to Get The Perfect Smile at Home?
September 18th, 2009Contrary to popular belief, getting a dashing smile is not the exclusive premise of the dentist. Often, simple and well-known methods are sufficient to produce white and healthy teeth. A good oral hygiene is definitely the first step towards a perfect smile. It also helps keep the mouth clean producing added benefits of good health and nice breath. Some of the home techniques that can be used to enhance one’s smile are described below.
Tooth Whitening at Home
Unlike what most people think, tooth whitening can be done safely and effectively at home. There is no need for a visit to the dentist. Many people have (legitimate or otherwise) apprehensions to visiting the dentist. Home tooth whitening methods serve these people well. Tooth whitening solutions can be divided into two categories: commercial products and traditional remedies. Commercial teeth whitening products have proliferated in the recent past banking on the desire of people to have a better appearance without having to go to the dentist. Some of these bleaching products include:
- Teeth Whitening Strips—separate strips containing peroxide are placed over the top and bottom teeth. This is an easy, economical and effective method that is quite popular.
- Teeth Whitening Toothpaste—this is not as effective but is efficient at removing stains. It contains mild abrasives and polishing agents.
There is no effect on the natural color of the tooth.
- Dental Trays—are now available over the counter. They contain a bleaching gel. Results are apparent over a period of two to three weeks.
- Dental Paint On—with this method a bleaching gel containing peroxide is brushed over each individual tooth.
Home remedies for white teeth have been in use for a long time and include the following traditional methods:
- Bicarbonate paste with water—gurgling with this mix results in whiter and shinier teeth.
- Lemon juice paste and salt—this eliminates the yellowish tinge that commonly develops in teeth. The acidic content of the lemon is also thought to whiten the teeth.
- Bay leaves with dried orange peel—frequent application results in whiter teeth.
- Inner Orange Peel—rubbing the inner white part of orange peels on the teeth is supposed to give teeth a beautiful shine.
Of course, besides these remedies, one can also adopt preventive methods that will prevent teeth discoloration in the first place. For one, smoking has to be stopped once and for all. Consumption of certain foods and drinks should be decreased (e.g. coffee, red wine, and sodas). Increase the proportion of foods that help the tooth (e.g. apples, pears, carrots, and cucumbers). Their high fiber content helps remove bacteria.
Brushing for Perfect Smile
Surprising as it may seem, rigorous and effective brushing is one of the most effective ways to keep the teeth healthy, white and shiny. The proper motions are important in brushing. Always begin at the back (even though this may not affect your smile, it is important for the overall oral hygiene). Turn your wrists so that the brush rolls over the teeth. Rotate the brush in a clockwise manner. If you want your smile to be impeccable, concentrate a little bit more on the frontal teeth.
