Cheese May Prevent Cavities, New Research Shows

According to this new research, published in General Dentistry, the peer-reviewed clinical journal of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), cheese has the anti-cavity properties.

The study is based on the fact that a pH lower than 5.5 increases the chances of tooth erosion, a process that wears off the protective enamel. “The higher the pH level is above 5.5, the lower the chance of developing cavities,” - explains Vipul Yadav, MDS, lead author of the study.

68 people were checked for dental plaque pH levels after consuming milk, sugar free yoghurt and cheese. The researchers measured pH levels in mouths of subjects from all three groups 10, 20 and 30 minutes after the consumption.

The groups who consumed milk and yoghurt showed no change in the pH levels in their mouths, whilst those who consumed cheese experienced a rapid increase in their pH levels during each of the mentioned intervals.

The researchers attributed the rise in pH levels to the increase of the saliva production, which is known to be the natural way of tackling excessive acidity in the mouth. The research showed active compounds found in cheese are able to reduce oral acidity and protect tooth enamel.

    This is GREAT news because I love cheese! The science behind it is interesting as well. I wonder if there are other foods that have the same effect that cheese has.

    Is there a link to the study/scientific article? What kind of cheese was studied (cheddar, low moisture skim, whole, etc.)?
