A group of consumer activists in Sydney Australia have warned that although the treats that are sugar free may appear to be healthy, they are acidic in nature which may cause severe damage to children’s teeth.
Most people look at children’s treats that have a label that says sugar free on it and immediately think that they are good for the child’s teeth.
However, what they don’t realize is that in some cases these products are just as bad for the child. This is according to Brad Schmitt who works for a Sydney newspaper.
There are many popular snacks such as Kellogg’s Nutri Grain bars was determined to be very high in both sugar and acid, according to the group’s survey of 85 different processed drinks and foods.
Brad Schmitt has said that children love their fruit snacks and muesli bars but parents need to limit them to a treat only once a week.
Acids and sugar both damage the tooth’s enamel and result in the slow erosion of the enamel. However, sugar is thought to be much worse because bacteria thrive on it.
Saliva helps to re mineralize the teeth that have been damaged by the acid and sugar.
Neil Hewson, who is president of the Australian Dental Association, has said that means that if you have only limited have exposure every now and again the natural balance will take care of itself.
