During the first weeks while you wear the braces you will find it extremely difficult to eat the way you used to. There are certain foods that you should definitely avoid, and in all bad things there is a little good because you might manage to lose a few unwanted pounds this way.
Hard bread, raw veggies, meats or seeds and nuts should be definitely avoided. Then, also stay away from the chewy and sticky foods such as bagels, licorice, gum or milky caramels.
Regarding crunchy foods, these should be avoided as well. These include but not limited to chips, popcorn or even ice. Apples or carrots are extremely healthy, but you need to bite into these foods, and they might cause you sore gums because of the pressure exercised by your braces.
Stay away from these foods for a few weeks, and concentrate on soft foods which are also very good for digestion: milkshakes, natural fruit juices, mashed potatoes, etc.
When dental braces hurt
Right after you get your braces on, you will have a general feeling of soreness, and even inflammation of your gums might trouble you. You should make sure to alleviate this soreness by rinsing your mouth regularly with a mixture of lukewarm water and salt.
The salt has got antibacterial properties, while the water will help you flush away all the food particles that might have been stuck in between your teeth and the teeth.
Then, in case the interior of your mouth or your lips feel sore or dry because of the pressure exercised by the braces, you should use a special wax on the braces to keep the mouth tissues soft and lubricated.
