According to a study published in the Journal of Periodontal Research blackberries have antibacterial properties which could help to stop gum disease developing, and it is not just healthy teeth and gums which the fruit can help with – previous studies have shown that natural ingredients in blackberries can help to block the spreading of cancerous cells in the body.
Commenting on the research Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said: “Having a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals and fresh produce to provide anti-oxidants is something we should all be striving to achieve.
“It can help to prevent a number of oral health problems including gum disease and oral cancer, not to mention potential heart problems too. Given we are only a few days into the new year, if you have not adopted a New Year’s resolution it is well worth considering improving your diet.”
He went on to comment that people should view adding blackberries to their diet as an addition to their dental hygiene routine, and pointed out the importance of maintaining good oral health at all times.
Dental hygiene “does not take up much time or a lot of money” he said, but is still often neglected.
By following a simple dental hygiene routine gum disease can be prevented, Dr Carter said. According to the dental health specialist brushing for two minutes twice a day, using a fluoride toothpaste, using floss and regularly visiting a dentist are enough to stop the spread of tooth decay.
Healthy teeth add to overall good health and should always be a priority. As Dr Carter pointed out, it doesn’t take much time to look after teeth and gums, and items for tooth care, from brushes to pastes, are affordable.
If you’re thinking of eating more blackberries to keep your teeth sparkling and healthy then you might be interested to know that as well as being key in the fight against cancer, and helping to keep mouths healthy, blackberries can help to reduce the risk of heart disease, contain very high levels of vitamin C and fibre, are great for skin and can help to relieve the symptoms of PMS and menopause in women.
