HOT!

Statistics of the American Cancer Society show that this year only well over 34,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer.

Out of these, approximately 6,900 are predicted to be diagnosed with oral cancer in terminal phase.

The West Virginia School of Medicine offers this Monday free oral cancer screenings. The location of the event: 1st floor conference room at the WVU Hospitals- East Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson.

Free oral cancer screenings will be coordinated by Dr. Majid Shafei who is a clinical professor at WVU School of Medicine.

There will be no appointments required and the free oral cancer screening programs will run from 8a.m to 11a.m. Dr. Majid attracts the attention upon the fact that oral cancer can actually go undiagnosed for months.

Sometimes, when it is discovered it is already too late; this is mainly so because in its incipient phase the disease is typically not painful, and the location of the tumor might be in a place which is not obvious when the patient performs self examination.

Oral cancer screenings are extremely important, since they encourage the early detection of the disease and proper treatment in time. Those who are mostly exposed to the risk of developing oral cancer, are people who are 50 years of age or older.

The risk for oral cancer is greatly increased if the person smokes or drinks heavily.

Dentists are able to detect oral cancer even in the early stage; however, for that to happen people must respect their routine dental checkups. People who lack dental insurance, and those who simply cannot afford even the routine dental checkups, should definitely take advantage of this humanitarian medical event.

The screening is not painful at all, and it takes less than 5 minutes to be performed. Those interested to find out more about the clinic, should call at the following number: 304-262-9400
