Dentist Doug and his wife called Sandy will volunteer for three weeks this year in the free dental team of the Sierra Leone mission.

This year alone, there have been treated 7,000+ people struggling with dental issues; they have been treated on the hospital ship Africa Mercy serving in the West African nation.

According to the dentist, he and his wife will have to evaluate whether they will still have the energy in order to keep up with the pace.

His wife has been working as a dental assistant for well over 36 years now, and in general this has been a very challenging time.

They are both extremely impressed with how the organization outreaches to these poor people, and the Africa Mercy is one of the most superior humanitarian organizations they have worked with.

According to Doug, the need for dental hygienists in the region of Sierra Leone has proved even bigger compared to their previous experience while volunteering in the region of Benin.

There, on the very first morning of their service they have seen more than 500 people lined up to receive the free dental services.

Doug further reveals that he has worked as a dental hygienist for more than 40 years now. However, even such a huge experience in the field cannot have one prepared for such a giant mission as the one in Africa.

Dentists on service there have to put up with far greater dental issue challenges than the ones one has to face in Australia. The Mercy Ships are in a constant need of skilled dental hygienists, since the demand is so high.
