Unfortunately, at the moment there is an estimated number of 4,000 homeless people living in the Birmingham metro area alone.
At least for some of them, the fourth annual Project Homeless Connect brought a smile to their face last Saturday.
At the event, one could observe the truly and sincerely joined forces of hundreds of volunteers and more than 60 social service agencies.
They all came together to bring a good wish to people who live on the streets because they have no other choice. What they got on this day was:
- Free shoes- even if used, having proper shoes on their feet is very important for someone who has to walk all day long in search for some food or work.
- Free eye examination and glasses
- Free blood pressure checks
- Free checks for TB (tuberculosis)
- Free dental exams and dental care services
The presence of the social services agencies was very important too- they helped with finding proper housing for the homeless.
Michelle Farley who is the leader of the One Roof organization, stated that since the recession began in the US, there has been observed an increased demand for finding housing facilities and shelters for the people of the street.
Such humanitarian events are highly needed because they can truly make a difference in the lives of people who are less fortunate.
