Dental phobia is a sort of anxiety blended with worries and a lot of stress, whenever you have to pay a visit to the dentist’s office.
Many people who struggle with dental phobia avoid regular checkups and even emergency dental treatments, and this may result in catastrophic dental health issues for them.
What can happen if you let your phobia take over you?
- You might struggle later with chronically infected gums, so you will not be able to chew correctly, so your digestion will also have to suffer
- You might confront yourself with tooth loss. Dental implants are extremely expensive, and these might involve a lengthy/ painful treatment process
- Bad breath issues due to infected teeth
Check out the following statements to see if they are true in your case. If yes, it means that you are most likely struggling with dental phobia:
- A previous visit to the dentist has been unpleasant to you and this constantly pops into your mind
- You are concerned about the fact that the dentist might make some uncomfortable remarks regarding your overall dental health
- You constantly postpone appointments because you feel extremely nervous right before heading to the dental office
- Anxiety overwhelms you in the waiting room; sometimes you feel you are on the verge of losing consciousness
- When you see the dental instruments you sense “fear”
- During the checkup when the dentist uses the instruments, you have the sensation that you cannot breathe properly / struggle with a panicky feeling
- You feel anxious even when you catch a glimpse of the dentist’s white robe or the pair of latex gloves he is about to put on
With a lot of patience and determination there are several ways that can help you put dental phobia behind you. Even if you will not get rid of the anxiety and stress for good, at least you will be able to feel somewhat comfortable going to the dentist, and you will not miss your appointments from now on:
- Firstly, choose a dentist that is sympathetic to you as a person, as a character. This fact can greatly help you not being afraid of the “doctor” himself. You should feel comfortable talking to him, and a good professional will always listen to your wants and wishes, and will know what techniques to perform in order to make it easier/ less painful/ less stressful for you.
- Communicate with your dentist- if you know from beforehand all the procedures that will be performed on you, nothing will strike you by surprise. This way, you manage to reduce your phobia even more.
- Enjoy some relaxation techniques right before going to the dentist. Learn more about breathing techniques that help you relax; try yoga and progressive muscle relaxation techniques.
- Defocus. Try to listen to the music in the background, or think of something pleasant for you. If you exercise on this method, you will surely be able to reduce the intensity of anxiety and panic that you feel.

Great article! This is a very common phobia. As with all phobias, facing them is the key to overcoming them. This is best done with gradual exposure to the feared stimulus with the goal of desensitization. It might begin with sitting in the dentist’s office. Then meeting the dentist. Then a basic oral exam. Sometimes imagined exposure is useful prior to in vivo (real life). Meditation techniques are also very helpful. This phobia can be overcome!
