Statistics have proven many times that tens of millions of Americans have no health insurance. For those who have, 100 million of those have no dental coverage in their insurance. Health care plans are too expensive and those plans aided by employers usually do not include dental insurance.

For uninsured dental patients, a simple toothache that may sometimes turn into a serious tooth problem that will require a crown or an implant would mean thousands of dollars out from their own pockets. Regular checkups, teeth cleaning and fillings can cost hundreds of dollars. These costly teeth care procedures causes millions of Americans which mostly are uninsured dental patients, not to visit a dentist for a year.

Even though there are health care bills proposed in the House of Senate which include dental care provisions, this likely will not come too soon. Due to these concerns, consumers especially those uninsured dental patients, were left no choice but to find ways for affordable dental care.
“Prevention is better than cure.” This passage had passed through our ears for thousands of times. We may neglect it but the fact remains that this is the cleverest way to avoid costly dental procedures.

Filling a small tooth cavity would cost around $100. If left unchecked, a hundred dollar can worse turn into a $1000 root canal. A yearly teeth cleaning of $80 out of the pocket if avoided can even slit it by taking $2000 out from it for a gum disease treatment. So take a move before small problems turn to be your worst nightmare.

Another advice taken from the experts is recognizing full disclosure. A lot of patients are found to have a dental problem on their routine checkup. The dentists would right away offer to handle the problem and the patient without second thought accepts the offer. It is then at the end of the visit that the patient would discover the startling amount of bill to be paid.

It is necessary to those involved in every kind of transaction to disclose or reveal all the facts relating to it. In this situation, patients should be wise enough to discuss with the dentist any dental treatment to be undergone before agreeing to anything.

To have affordable dental care especially those with extensive dental procedures, stretching the cost could help. Stretching out the cost can be discussed with the dentist. This is much better than paying high interest rates when using your credit card. Another wise idea is to take massive treatments into stages. For instance, you need a tooth crown. You can negotiate with the dentist to use a temporary filling that would last for several months. In those months, you will be given a chance to save for the permanent dental crown.

Many patients have discovered affordable dental care by taking to dental school clinics instead of going to established dentists. There are many dental school clinics offering affordable dental care given by dental students. They are watched by experienced and qualified teachers while performing the treatment. You can pay as little as one thirds of what an established dentist would charge and yet you are assured with the quality of work done.

There are also communities who sponsor affordable dental clinics. They usually offer free dental services to those who are qualified with their requirements. The state’s dental director can help you find a clinic in your area. Employer-sponsored health insurance does not cover dental care. If there is, it only pays a little if you have big dental problems. For most dental care plans, a twice-a-year preventive care checkup is only included and only cover a small percentage of costly procedures like tooth implant. This makes the employer-provided dental care insurance quite useless. But for those uninsured patients, a discount network is a great deal. Discount networks have this offer where consumers will only have to pay about $100 to $200 every year in exchange to a 15 to 50 percent discounts on all services and treatments from all participating dentists.

The task of wisely choosing a better network is left to the consumers. Take time to give a thought to the terms and discounts covered by the plan so that your money will not be put to waste.

One Response to “Manage Dental Costs, Affordable Dental Care and Dental Insurance”

  1. Growing up without the financial means for regular dental checkups, I did not understand the value in seeing a dentist regularly. Seeing a dentist when I had no dental discomfort was an outright luxury my family could not afford. About five years ago, at the age of 30, I had to go through complete periodontal surgery to remove many years of calculus and buildup, in order to prevent my enamel and bones from receding further.

Now that I’m a parent, I’m much more religious about taking my two year old daughter to see the dentist. Even though the exams primarily comprise of 5-minute visual exams - no drilling, or real treatment - I’m happy to start habituating her to the idea of seeing a dentist regularly for proper preventive care.

So, looking in my crystal ball, thirty years from now, she will have a beautiful smile and healthy set of teeth which she will be proud to wear and show people.

I cannot agree more with the statement that “prevention is the best form of dental care.”
