The dental prosthesis has been around since as early as 700BC; it is not an invention of the modern era. The main difference was that at the time other materials were used, and the procedures were obviously different.

In old times, the teeth were so precious that they have been robbed out of the tombs and graves, and also people used to pull their own teeth from their mouth in order to sell them.

As time progressed, the dentures have been basically carved out of animal bones or ivory. Then, the carved piece was fixated into the patients’ mouth; it was basically tied to other healthy teeth in order to stay in place. The main problem was that these materials were decaying after some time, so new techniques were needed.

As early as 1791, Nicholas Debois de Chemant brought to light the porcelain dentures in England. This was basically the beginning of a huge industry, one that creates the pieces that patients wear even today.

The custom making of dental appliances is delivered by professionals who are called dental technicians. According to Jim Costain, the Greater Moncton Area is fighting with a terrible shortage of such dental technicians. According to him, a few decades back one could become much easier a dental technician.

You would go through several lab trainings and you became a professional, while nowadays you have to study at a university in order to become a licensed dental technician. The shortage is so great, that the last three technicians that were hired in the area were basically Korean citizens.

Furthermore, those who wish to join dental technology courses would have to seek for a university in Quebec or Toronto area.

Jim now is successfully running his own business with other two partners, the Hub Dental Lab- which is a full service lab with 28 employees who offer their services to all of the Maritimes, and also to areas such as Quebec, Ontario or Newfoundland.

They provide vital service to dentists by collaborating directly with them. They basically make everything from crowns and bridge ceramics and up to orthodontics and implants.
