Dental tourism is a great trend nowadays. People, who are struggling with oral health issues, look for such advantageous dental tourism packages.
However, it is important to keep in mind that there are several hidden reasons which prove why you shouldn’t actually travel abroad for such dental services.
First of all, many patients travel because they want a quick dental tourism treatment time. Sometimes, your local dentist might tell you that your dental treatment might take even up to three or four months. This is when you think that’s too much time, and you prefer dental tourism instead.
However, what you might miss to see is that your dentist says you need such a long teeth treatment period because he has too many patients on the list, or because the lab work might necessitate so much time.
Also, it is inadvisable to travel if you need orthodontics, because these require a lot of follow up checkups. After the dental braces are set, you might have to check with your dentist twice a month for these adjustments to be done.
If you choose to travel to Mexico or to even more far places in order to get teeth straighten with dental braces, you need to plan ahead how you will settle these follow up treatments/checkups. It is always much better to have orthodontics works done with your local dentist, whom you can see every time there is a problem, and every time you need an adjustment.
Even if almost unbelievable, some people will choose to travel abroad for dental treatment, because they are afraid of their dentist. This is not a solution; if you struggle with a sort of a dental phobia that is strictly connected to your dentist, you should simply look for another dental professional that can make you feel comfortable during treatments.
Ask for recommendations from family members and friends for a new dentist, instead of traveling all those long miles for a dental treatment.
The savings when traveling abroad for dental treatments are actually quite small. You shouldn’t consider only the expenses for the dental services, but you should include all the travel costs, expenses for accommodation, food, etc. In the end, you might be extremely surprised to see that all you can save is merely $50 or $100. Is it worth the effort then?
Then, dental patients who are rejected for a certain dental treatment plan by their local dentist will choose to travel because they are sure there they will not get refused the treatment. For instance, your local doctor might refuse to perform dental implants.
However, there is a reason for that. Perhaps you are struggling with chronic gum disease, and then dental implants are definitely not an option. If you go abroad, you might think that you can pursue the dentist there to help you get dental implants, but in fact you are exposing yourself to a great deal of risk. Again, ask for a second opinion from another dentist before making such a hasty decision.
Yet another incorrect reason of choosing to travel abroad for dental treatments is when you wish to actually go on holiday and you would like to combine this with dental treatment.
Even if the dental tourism package you are offered comes at a very advantageous price, you should actually separate vacationing from traveling for health purposes. This is so because you have to count on the unexpected, such as frequent follow up treatments (daily, every other day, etc.), which would actually interfere with your vacationing plans.
Before making such a big decision as traveling abroad to get dental treatment, make sure that you take into account all of the risks that you might be exposed to.
