Since going overseas for dental treatment is not the same as going to your local dentist’s office where you are on a first name basis with everyone there, it can be overwhelming. In order to be successful in your pursuit of high quality, low cost overseas dental care, there are ten steps that you should know in order to save money, get adequate dental care, and have confidence in your decision.

1. Familiarize yourself with dental tourism and research dental procedures you need

Determine the reason so many people are willing to travel half way around the world for dental treatment. Learn all you can about the dental procedures you intend to have done. By doing this you will help clear up the following doubts you may have such as; Should you have this procedure done overseas?, are you the right candidate for the procedure?, and, is this procedure the right for your problem?

2. Determine if dental tourism is right for you

Dental tourism is not always the best choice for dental treatments that are not emergencies. There are times when the cost of transportation may overcome the possible savings that you will achieve by having your dental procedure done overseas. In addition, you may not have the time necessary for the dental travel or the dental procedure that is required. Also, the dental procedure you require may not be available overseas with a reputable dentist.

3. Learn all you can about dental tourism destination

Some countries have the reputation for top quality dental care facilities while others do not. Do some research and make your decision wisely. Distance can also play an important role in the decision about where to have your dental procedure done such as the case of small dental procedures.

4. Learn as much as you can about overseas dentists and facilities

Make sure the dental clinic employs the latest technologists and equipments. Be sure they have the dental expertise for the dental procedure that you desire. Determine what awards and accreditation they have. Ensure that the dentists are qualified and that they have formal training and education.

5. Have all your dental records ready for dental vacation

You will need you dental records during the pre consultation with your overseas dentist and when you go overseas for your dental procedure.

6. Request and compare quotes and be sure you are covered by dental insurance

The cost of dental care varies from one country to another and from one provider to another. Therefore you should request and compare quotes. The selection of a particular provider and country should not only be based on low cost but should also be based on quality as well as the distance.

There are some insurance companies that have dental tourism plans. Therefore, if you are covered under an overseas dental treatment plan, your insurer might cover your dental tourism expenses either in part or in full. Be sure to check with your dental insurance company for the details of your coverage.

7. Acquire your visa and plan your dental vacation itinerary

Check with the foreign countries embassy if a visa is required for entry and apply for it accordingly. Allow sufficient time for recovery when you are planning your itinerary. Prepare yourself for a shorter or a longer stay than expected. If you plan to travel, permit sufficient time for that as well.

8. Book your rooms and tickets for dental vacation

Book your tickets and your lodging ahead of time so that following your surgery, you can relax at a hotel or a resort or go traveling in the foreign country. Try to make these arrangements ahead of time.

9. Apply for a travel insurance plan and apply for a dental finance loan

You should consider buying a short term health and emergency assistance policy that are designed for travelers. Travel insurance gives dental tourists coverage for unforeseen problems, such as a serious illness or a canceled flight. If you do not have sufficient funding for your overseas dental treatment, you might want to apply for dental loan. There are loan companies that provide patient payment plans for dental procedures.

10. Prepare for your recovery at home after dental vacation, pack your bags and make the trip

In some cases, you may need to prepare your recovery at home. If, for instance, you are only allowed to eat certain foods following your dental procedure, you may want to make sure in advance that you have those foods at home during your recovery after dental tourism.

Be sure that you travel in clothing that is comfortable. Take with you at least one major credit card, traveler’s checks, and some local currency. Make sure you travel back home with all your medicines and dental records in your carryon luggage.

If you follow the above steps your trip to discover dentistry abroad will be successful. To make sure your dental travel is as easy as possible, you may want to use a dental tourism provider to help you with all the logistics of dental tourism.
