Easy access to dentists across Europe has lead to a boom in dental tourism in recent years.
With their combination of low cost and strong educational traditions, Central European countries including Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic are the top ranking destinations.
With such big competition, it is no wonder that dentists from the west are worried. Here are some common misconceptions among patients that your home dentist will never correct!
#1 – Horror Stories In The Press
Ever read a story in the newspaper about the person who saved several thousand pounds on extensive dental treatment such as implants by going abroad?
Of course not, that is not news! What the papers love is a horror story – something going wrong with a few choice quotes from unhappy patients.
Thankfully these are extremely rare, and with tens of thousands of people flying every year – the number of happy customers is huge.
#2 – Language Barriers
What if you can not effectively communicate with your dentist – or understand what he is saying to you? Nervousness about language is a key reason people hesitate to appreciate the benefits of dental treatment abroad. The good news is that this fear is completely unfounded.
Dentists who deal with foreign patients are not only fluent in English, they often speak a 3rd or even 4th language too. Reputable agencies employ screening for all of the clinics they recommend, and will be happy to arrange for you to speak to your dentist on the phone if you require.
#3 – Training And Experience
Central European countries have a strong educational tradition which goes back many centuries.
These countries have participation rates in further education which would put many western countries to shame, and benefit from a population with a strong desire to keep improving their knowledge and skills. This can be seen strongly in dentistry and medicine – which are regulated by the European Union.
Dentists from these countries are qualified to practice in the UK with their qualifications after only a short competency test and proof of experience. Here is the bottom line, these dentists are as well trained – and often better educated – than any dentist in the west.
#4 – Coping With A Strange City
Many prospective dental tourists are put off by not knowing what to expect in their destination cities. Will it be safe? How easy is it to get around? Will the people understand me? Those who make the trip quickly find that these fears are unfounded.
Cities like Budapest and Prague cater for hundreds of thousands of tourists each year and have modern transport and infrastructure. Your real problem will be deciding which of the fantastic attractions and restaurants to visit while you are there.
#5 – Equipment And Cleanness
Finally, some prospective patients are concerned about how clean and modern the clinics in these countries are compared to those at home. When you make the trip you are in for a pleasant surprise!
Not only are the dental clinics spotless and comfortable, the equipment used is usually the latest (German built) technology. Computer technology and the latest in chairs combined with some of the best educated dentists in the world – small wonder why many chooses these dentists every time!
As word of mouth news of how good Central European dental services are and the huge savings possible spreads, the boom in numbers of patients can only grow.
Remember, your home dentist has an interest in preserving many of the doubts in patents minds. Big savings, a great city break and top class treatment can be only a couple of hours away.

Just because a dentist is licensed to practice in the UK doesn’t make them competent. As an Australian dentist I have seen too many victims of the NHS to lead me to believe UK dentistry is not synonymous with high quality. In fact, Australia stopped automatically recognising UK registered dentists for some time after many European dentists came into the country through the ‘back door’ by first getting UK registration. The quality of work was the issue. I’m sure there are a plethora of good European dentists out there but lets not make generalizations. Europe is big place with lots of different standards.
