Nearly 2,000 show up for free health care in Virginia

WISE, Va. — Nearly 2,000 people crowded onto a southwest Virginia fairgrounds Friday and waited hours to receive free dental care, eyeglasses and medical procedures.

Remote Area Medical founder Stan Brock said the daily limit of 1,600 patients for the three-day clinic in Wise County was reached by 5:30 a.m. Friday. Another 200 people were admitted to the treatment area later in the morning, but several hundred more had to be turned away.

Former prisoners to receive free dental care

Nearly two dozen former prisoners will be getting a dental makeover for free.

The New Mexico Corrections Department received a federal grant of more than $850,000 to fix the teeth of prisoners who have dental problems stemming from drug abuse.

Dentist gives free care to thousands in Zambia

Dr. Jim Elias is the doctor without pain. At least he is to the thousands of Zambians to whom he has given free dental care.

“They called me the doctor without pain because we would numb them before we went to work on them,” Elias said.

Berger offers mobile dentists

On July 14, Berger Hospital Financial Counselors partnered with the Mobile Dentists and Smiles Program to provide dental examinations and cleanings to local children under the age of 18. A total of 12 children were seen by the Mobile Dentist.

Mobile Dentists and Smile Programs are innovative, on-site, school-based dental outreach providers. Their mission is to bring state-of-the-art, preventative dental care to those students in need – in the most comfortable and effective way possible. The hosting facility never incurs a cost, as the Mobile Dentists and Smile Programs are dedicated to providing dental services and education to those who are handicapped through economic circumstances. The Mobile Dentists provide services such as cleanings, fluoride, x-rays, education and free toothbrushes.
