Uninsured flock to free clinic in Louisa
LOUISA—It wasn’t like pulling teeth; they came all on their own. From Fluvanna, Richmond and even Pennsylvania, people lacking insurance but needing dental care flocked to a free clinic in Louisa. Some asked for toothache relief and others discovered something about themselves that they didn’t know: They had high blood pressure or were at risk of diabetes.
Organized by Dr. John Andre and Holly Grove Rescue Squad paramedic Vickie Harte, the April 10 clinic featured numerous dentists providing oral care for 176 people and rescue squad personnel screening patients for hypertension and diabetes. What they found was a lot of people needing extractions and, possibly, medications.

Dentists say more patients may be putting off cleanings and check-ups as they go without dental insurance. Now, there’s a new plan to help people without insurance get regular check-ups. It’s called the Quality Dental Plan.
A regular cleaning can seem like a luxury for someone without dental insurance. Dr. Steffany Mohan with The Plaza Dental Group says, “We were finding patients were having a hard time and a lot of companies have instead of dropping other benefits, they have dropped dental insurance. So, there are a lot of patients that don’t have dental insurance out there.”
