According to a new study, in Jordan about 65% of school children have dental cavities. The study also indicated that only 2% of school children use dental floss and only 18% of school children brush their teeth effectively.
The sample size of the study was 1,004 children from schools across the nation of Jordan.
According to other studies, 15% of parents neither car for their dental health nor advise their children on how to brush and floss, 60% advise their children on how to brush and floss but don’t monitor them, and 25% advise their children on how to brush and floss and supervise the procedure.
These studies also indicated that 30% only concentrate on the treatment, while 70% of dentists explain the procedures to their patients prior to the treatment, while 30% only concentrate on the treatment.
The study was funded by the World Dental Federation (WDF), who has taken the initiative in order to educate school children on oral and dental health. It was also noted that a pilot project was implemented in some selected schools for a period of one year and the WDF then decided to extend it.
Out of 278,758 school children that tested for dental problems, 185,780 were diagnosed with various dental related diseases. They are also working to establish a joint council to follow up on all of the dental related issues that are associated with school children.
The council will have members representing ministries, as well as local communities and universities.
In addition, in cooperation with the World Health Organization, they will establish a database to determine the prevalence of dental diseases in schools and the areas that have the highest prevalence.
Currently in Jordan, there are 4,000 public schools and 1,500 private schools accommodating some 1,200,000 students.
