Professional Dental Cleanings Help Decrease Heart Attack

According to a recent study, there is enough evidence to prove that having healthy teeth and gums increases the chances of avoiding heart disease complications.

Unfortunately however, there are currently quite a lot of residents of US who cannot afford even a simple procedure such as professional dental cleaning.

The good news is that Donated Dental is such a clinic in Salt Lake City, Utah, where people with lower means of income can have access to low cost dental care services.

Here, one can see every day between 75 and 80 people forming long lines in order to have access to low cost dental services.

Their names are put into a drawing, and then about 30 are drawn out. Those who are lucky enough will be offered professional dental services by the volunteers, while the other ones are invited to come back and see if they can get through some other day.

It is important to mention that the affordable clinic is run thanks to donations and volunteers who dedicate their time and skills here; they understand very well that besides making smiles more beautiful they are also offering affordable dental services that can prove life saving for the patient.

A new study run on 100,000 participants shows that those ones who had their teeth cleaned professionally, actually lowered by 24% their risk of developing heart attack, and by 13% their risk for stroke.

According to Jason Teerlink, DMD, the human mouth is basically a gateway for all kinds of bacteria which enter the bloodstream. These bacteria can cause inflammation, which in turn can spread from the mouth to all the other major organs in the body.

The entire cardiovascular system is extremely vulnerable when it comes to these kinds of infectors, so this is why proper oral heath care is extremely important.

The study has also revealed that the higher the inflammation/decay degree in the teeth, the higher the risk of developing a cardiovascular disease.

The volunteers working at the Donated Dental know that they can serve only a small percentage of people who really need affordable dental services, and this is why they are hoping that more funds will be made available so that they will be able to serve an even larger number of patients.
