Poor Oral Health a Direct Effect of Obesity

According to a recent study, obesity strongly contributes to poor oral health.

It has been also concluded that the higher the severity of the tooth problems the patient struggles with, the higher the incidence of the persons that have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 or even more.

It is important to know that the World Health Organization renders a BMI of 30 or over as “obesity”. The normal weight body mass index is between 18.5 and 24.9.

According to data from 2008, the number of overweight people exceeded 1.5 billion (20+ years old). These numbers also show that there have been far more women struggling with obesity than men – 300 million women vs. 200 million men.

Dr Nigel Carter who is the chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation says that dental health awareness is extremely important, and that dental professionals should take on a more intense role in dealing with the issue. He further argues that it is important to keep in mind that almost 1 in 4 adults in the UK are struggling with obesity; therefore these people are greatly exposed to the risk of developing severe oral health problems.

The dentist’s job should stretch way further than just checking on oral health, Carter suggests. The responsibilities of the dentists in general could be broadened- for instance, a dentist should check for other illnesses such as diabetes, because this is a health issue that greatly affects oral health.

The British Dental Health Foundation further recommends:

  • People should brush their teeth for 2 minutes at least, twice a day
  • Use a toothpaste that has fluoride as an ingredient
  • Respect the regular checkups with the dentist
  • Cut down the sugary foods and drinks because they are the enemies of health in general

By respecting rigorously all of the above mentioned rules, people will drastically reduce the incidence of tooth decay and tooth loss, and hey will be able to keep their gums healthy.

Dr Carter says that unfortunately, the long working hours make people snacking and grazing constantly during the day. However, these snack times only contribute to obesity and further to a poor oral health. Instead, it is better to try and stick to the 3 meals a day
