The USDA will further ensure that healthy products are being used in the food production and that kids have access to pure drinking water with their meals.

The government is calling for dramatic changes in school meals, including limiting french fries, sodium and calories and offering students more fruits and vegetables.

Healthy diet is essential for children’s good dental health as well.

Dental professionals give a few important advices that will help keep healthy gums and teeth in children:

  • Sugar free chewing gums that contain xylitol (natural sweetener) actually help improving dental health
  • Drinking fluoridated tap water is the best for dental health
  • Tooth decay can be prevented by eating cheese, which is a food that actually neutralizes the acids that are formed in the plaque.
  • By boosting the production of saliva in the mouth, sugars that are a threat to teeth and general health are being flushed away. The best way to achieve this is by eating fresh fruits and vegetables (cucumbers, apples, carrots, etc.).

The program is supported by Medicaid, but they will make sure that students enrolled in the program are entitled to access, that they come indeed from low income families.

Throughout the world there are many countries that adopt a similar form of food standard regulation throughout schools. In India for example, more than 100 million children receive a hot lunch at school. All these healthy nutrition policies come to help children maintain a good dental health and avoid obesity.
