Medical volunteers work to provide free services
This week, thousands of people will head to the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena to take advantage of free medical and dental services. The Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps is organizing the clinic in L.A for a second time. To get in, you will need a wristband. Organizers passed out about 6,000 on Sunday. A few, like 72-year-old Cora Russell, tried their luck after arriving too late. Cora arrived in her motor-operated wheelchair to get a wristband that would get free medical, dental or vision services. She needs her dentures fixed and Medicare won’t pay for it.

Smiles amid the chaos
Dental providers spend a day at a mega-clinic providing free care to people in need. They savor the smiles of their post-treatment patients.
So when dental hygienist P.J. Attebery showed up with her planers and curettes at a free medical clinic in the Forum last year, she was prepared for the crowds, the questions, the chaos. But she wasn’t prepared for the gratitude.
The free dental clinic was sponsored by Remote Area Medical, a foundation begun 25 years ago to bring medical care to Third World countries, and now making the rounds of the nation’s big cities.
Last August, during its first visit to Los Angeles, almost 7,000 would-be patients crowded the Forum parking lot. Organizers were unprepared for the crush; hundreds of people were turned away.

Mobile Dental Office Treats Uninsured In Cambria County
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — In light of an earlier report that Pennsylvania is failing when it comes to dental care for children, a local grant will now be able to help provide that care to local kids and their families.
Lee Initiatives gave the Johnstown Free Medical Clinic a $30,000 grant. With dentist Dr. John Ridella lending a hand, the clinic is setting up a new mobile dental unit that will travel all over Cambria County.
“It’s basically a dental office you can drive, park and go to work,” Ridella said. The free service will go to people who need it the most, he said.
