There is a new development in the field of dental implantology that is now being vastly accepted by dental practitioners and patients alike and that is mini implants. Claimed to be the answer to persistent denture problems, mini implants provide fast and convenient solutions to total dental care. Today, mini implants represent the epitome on the modern development and advancement of dental science.

This is how the mini dental implant works: The implant system is made up of a tiny (about 1.8 mm) titanium implant that is placed at the base of the denture. The mini implant serves as the root of the tooth and acts as a retaining fixture.

Mini dental implants are now FDA approved and contribute an effective method to secure dentures. Its efficacy has been exceptionally accepted that it has become a famous procedure used by dentists. These titanium mini implants are also used to support dental crowns in special cases wherein the crown that not leave enough room for ordinary implants.

Denture stabilization which is often referred to as single day implant is a revolutionary breakthrough in the field of dentistry. This procedure allows lower dentures to stabilize through the use of mini dental implants.

When compared to standard implants, MDI’s or mini dental implants are faster and thinner, because it allows quick loading which means that a patient can come in today to have a surgery procedure performed on the lower denture and can go home with the job completed and can even immediately use the dentures for chewing within that same day.

The introduction, approval and continuing observation of success of smaller-diameter mini-implants have stimulated use of implants in situations in which standardsized implants could not have been used without grafting. The result has been more patients who have been served successfully at reduced cost with minimized pain and trauma — patients who could not have been treated with implants otherwise. Continuing research is needed for further verification of the acceptability of mini implants.

There are many advantages of Mini Dental Implants both among patients and dental practitioners. Some of these advantages are:

  • Mini Dental Implants offer lesser complications as compared to standard implants. The procedure is simpler and faster.
  • MDIs are considered to be fast implants, procedures can be within a matter of hours and requires very little time as recovery period. One can use the dentures within the same day of the surgery.
  • The procedure needed to complete an MDI is simple and involves lesser surgical processes.
  • Since Mini implants require lesser surgical procedures, there are also lesser chances for a patient to suffer from bone trauma or other minor injuries inherent to dental surgical procedures.
  • The patient will not experience post surgical complications.

Dentists and dental practitioners also prefer using this method over conventional methods because of its simplicity in terms of learning and application. Mini implants are far easier to implement than conventional implants. In the past, most dentists chose not to perform dental implants because of the complexity of the procedure. Mini implants today offer a simpler solution that is less technically demanding. Many dentists now prefer this method over standard dental implants.

There are probably dentists within your area who can provide with mini dental implants to patients. Each dentist may have his or her own recommendations as to how to customize the use of mini dental implants.
