Going to dentist causes tension to many patients. Due to fear of tooth extraction many people are neglecting their dental health. The discovery of lavender oil in helping you feel calm and feel no dental fear while sitting on the dental chair is another new approach in dental procedure.

In King’s College in London, 340 people were exposed to lavender oil scent before the dental treatment started and it was found out that this people has less tension and feel more relax about the dental procedure they are going to undergo.

However, the British Psychological Society disagrees to this finding. They said that lavender has no effect and they recommend hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy is one of effective strategies used by dentist in making patients fell calm and comfortable while dental treatment.

Another study was conducted to group of patients who are waiting for their dental treatment schedule. It was found out that those who did not smell the scent has dental anxiety level of 10.7 while those people who were exposed to the scent from a candle with 5 drops of lavender oil has only 7.4 level of dental anxiety.

Dental anxiety or dental fear felt by people under treatment does not only affect his dental health but also to the dentist who performs the procedure or dental treatment. It was noted that due to the tension of their patient the performance of the dentist was also affected. This is the reason why it is very crucial to work on reducing the anxiety before performing the dental surgery or procedure. The use of lavender oil could reduce the stress felt by patients who are waiting for their dental schedule.

On the other hand, British Dental Association spokeswoman suggested that the dentist must use their different strategies such as hypnotherapy or counseling to comfort their patient.

No matter what kind of techniques they are going to use it doesn’t matter, the most important is how it applies to their patient’s situation.
