Health Ministry Finds that Fluoridation Does Not Reduce Tooth Decay

Statistics from a study conducted by the New Zealand Ministry of Health suggest that there are no advantages derived from fluoridation. These statistics actually match similar arguments set forth by the American Dental Association.

The latter organization conducted a large study on some 39000 American children and found that they did not derive any advantages from the use of fluoride.

The process of fluoridation is the practice of adding fluoride minerals to a water source so that people can get exposed to the mineral through drinking water. Some bodies of water already have fluoride in them and do not need fluoride added.

The fluoride is allegedly added so that it can help in the prevention of cavity development. The practice of adding fluoride to water is suppose to allow many people, regardless of income, to receive healthy doses of fluoride. Yet, recent studies are revealing that the fluoridation practices do little in terms of cavity prevention, if anything at all.

The study conducted in New Zealand by the Ministry of Health reveals that children living in areas with no fluoride have one percent fewer cavities than those children that reside in regions where fluoridation is offered. Nevertheless, the Health Ministry still asserts that some thirty percent of children will gain some advantages from regular fluoridation.

While the assertion may seem somewhat paradoxical, the statistics offered by the organization mix low and high socioeconomic towns and cities to supply a figure to represent the nation. This mixing of statistics results in a rather poor representation of what is really going on.

Some researchers argue that the statistics would reveal that both groups of tested children would benefit from fluoridation if fluoridation had advantages.

In truth, the statistics are actually revealing that children are simply not benefiting from the use of fluoridation. The bottom line is that the Ministry of Health is trying to make the use of fluoridation sound more promising.

Some researchers suggest that the Ministry is acting against at least fifty years of studies that indicate fluoridation does not provide an adequate defense against cavities.

I find that hard to accept. It is very difficult to study this now as fluoride is so pervasive – trace amounts in foods prepared in fluoridated water, fluoride toothpaste etc etc.

We need to compare situation now to that of 50 – 80 or 100 years ago.

    Fluoride is beneficial.

Fluoridation: Not Safe at 1 ppm!

From the California Dental Association Executive Bulletin, January 12, 2010:

“Specifically, ADA granted CDA $200,000 to assist in our effort to prevent the placement of “fluoride and its salts” on the List of Chemicals Known to the State to Cause Cancer or Reproductive Toxicity that is produced by the State of California, Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA). The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition 65) requires the governor to publish this list of toxic chemicals each year. OEHHA is currently considering fluoride and its salts for inclusion in the Proposition 65 listing. A determination is expected within the next 13 months.”

    Osteosarcoma (Bone Cancer) and Fluoridation
Caffey (1955) noted that the age, sex, and anatomical distribution of the cortical bone defects observed in the Kingston-Newburgh fluoridation trial were “strikingly” similar to that of osteogenic sarcoma. There was no follow up study.
Cohn (1992). The New Jersey Department of Health conducted a study of osteosarcoma occurrence in seven Central New Jersey counties. The study finds a statistically significant relationship between fluoridated water and osteosarcoma among males less than 20 years old.
Bassin (2001). A Doctoral Thesis from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine analyzed data from a large case control study of fluoride and osteosarcoma. A robust, statistically-significant relation (7 times increase) was found between consumption of fluoridated water during the childhood growth spurt (ages 6-8) and osteosarcoma among boys less than age 20.
Bassin (2006) Above age-specific work published in Cancer Causes and Control 17: 421-8. Among boys less than age 20 who consumed water with 0.3 to 0.99 ppm fluoride between ages 6-8, the risk of osteosarcoma was five times greater than for boys drinking nonfluoridated water. At 1 ppm or more, the risk was seven times greater.

Age-specific and age-standardized rates (ASR) of registered cancers for nine communities in the U.S.A. (21.8 million inhabitants, mainly whites) were obtained from IARC data (1978-82, 1983-87, 1988-92. The percentage of people supplied with “optimally” fluoridated drinking water (FD) obtained from the Fluoridation Census 1985, U.S.A. were used for regression analysis of incidence rates of cancers at thirty six sites (ICD-WHO, 1957). About two-thirds of sites of the body (ICD) were associated positively with FD. Cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx, colon and rectum, hepato-billiary and urinary organs were positively associated with FD. This was also the case for bone cancers in male, in line with results of rat experiments. The likelihood of fluoride acting as a genetic cause of cancer requires consideration.

Hydrogen bonding is a weak interaction that holds molecules together. They make and break easily and this is what makes them so versatile – indeed the hydrogen bonds formed between amides (the links between amino acids) are the most important weak hydrogen bonds in biological systems. That these can be disrupted by fluoride in the formation of much stronger bonds may explain how the chemically inert fluoride ion could interfere in the healthy operation of living systems. Thus some of the serious charges that are being laid at its door – genetic damage, birth defects, cancer and allergy response – may arise from fluoride interference after all.

    Hip Fracture and Fluoridation
Fluoride is incorporated more readily into mineralizing new bone rather than existing bone. Thus, adults retain about 50 percent of ingested fluoride whereas infants and children retain 87 percent. When fluoride substitutes the hydroxyl ion in the crystal lattice of bone, it makes bone more brittle and diminishes tensile strength. The link between fluoridated water and hip fracture:

    Fluoridated Water and the Brain
Varner JA et al. Brain Research 784, 284-298 (1998). Twenth-seven rats were divided into three groups and for one year were given either distilled water, distilled water with 2.1 ppm NaF – the same concentration of fluoride normally used in fluoridated drinking water – or distilled water with 0.5 ppm AlF3. In both treated groups, the aluminum levels in the brain were elevated relative to controls. The researchers speculate that fluoride in water may complex with the aluminum in food and enable it to cross the blood-brain barrier. Both treated groups also suffered neural injury and showed increased deposits of B-amyloid protein in the brain, similar to those seen in humans with Alzheimer’s disease. “While the small amount of ALF3 …required for neurotoxic effects is surprising, perhaps even more surprising are the neurotoxic effects of NaF” at 2.1 ppm, the authors write.

Masters R.D., Coplan M.J. et al. NeuroToxicology 21(6): 1091-1100. (2000) From the abstract:
Chronic, low-level dosage of silicofluoride (SiF) has never been adequately tested for health effects in humans. We report here on a statistical study of 151,225 venous blood lead (VBL) tests taken from children ages 0-6 inclusive, living in 105 communities of populations from 15,000 to 75,000. The tests are part of a sample collected by the New York State Department of Children’s Health, mostly from 1994-1998. Fluoridation status was determined from the CDC 1992 Fluoridation Census. For every age/race group, there was consistently significant association of SiF treated community water and elevated blood lead. The highest likelihood of children having VBL greater than the danger level of 10 micrograms per deciliter of blood occurs when they are both exposed to SiF treated water and likely to be subject to another risk factor known to be associated with high blood lead. Results are consistent with prior analyses of surveys of children’s blood lead in Massachusetts and NHANES III.

    Chronic Kidney Disease and Fluoridation
The kidneys are exposed to significant amounts of fluoride as they try to eliminate it from the body. At risk of retaining harmful levels of fluoride are the 16.8 % of U.S. population aged 20 years and over who have Chronic Kidney Disease (2004 NHANES). Formerly a proponent of fluoridation, the National Kidney Foundation wrote on April 15, 2008, “The 1981 NKF position paper on fluoridation is outdated. The paper is withdrawn and will no longer be circulated.”

Fluoride: Not Effective at 1 ppm!

Fluoridation has historically been “sold” to politicians and civic leaders by using photos of rampant Baby Bottle/Sippy Cup Tooth Decay (BBTD), a highly visible decay of the upper front teeth. The cause of the decay is high levels of strep mutan bacteria. Fluoridated water at 1 ppm does not kill this bacteria that, 1) colonize on tooth surfaces, 2) thrive and multiply on sugars, and 3) pass their acidic waste onto the dental enamel causing the damage we call tooth decay.

50 percent of U.S. Head Start children have Baby Bottle/Sippy Cup tooth decay from high levels of strep mutans bacteria. A steady source of sugar is supplied to the bacteria by sipping fluids rather than drinking fluids from a cup. The bacteria’s acidic waste first ravages the primary teeth and then continues on to decay the permanent teeth.

In January 2000, Dr. Kathleen Thiessen, Senior Risk Assessment Scientist at SENES Oak Ridge Inc. Center for Risk Analysis, reviewed the 1993-94 California Oral Health Needs Assessment for the City of Escondido (Keepers-of-the-Well.org, #17 Effectiveness) and stated in her critique:

    1) For preschool children, … any evaluation of the effectiveness of various measures (fluoridation) must control for the occurrence of BBTD and,

    2) Any study of the effectiveness of a particular measure (fluoridation) in preventing dental caries must control for the presence of dental sealants, or the results will be meaningless. and,

    3) In addition, if children with BBTD are thought to be more prone to developing caries in permanent teeth, then history of BBTD vs. caries incidence should be examined for both preschool and elementary children.

The dental literature is clear that elementary school children with a history of BBTD are indeed more prone to decay in permanent teeth. Therefore, controlling or adjusting for history of BBTD in elementary school children should be the norm but is never done! By not adjusting for BBTD history and sealants, dental studies of school children can claim a (false) fluoridation benefit!

When rats are delivered by cesarean section and maintained under sterile conditions, they can be kept in a germ-free state for generations. Carious lesions do not develop when germ-free rats are fed a caries-producing diet.

Bacteriocin typing of S. mutans has indicated that the mother is a major source of oral infection in her infant. …When all carious lesions in pregnant women were restored and they followed good dietary practices, their salivary S. mutans counts decreased to low levels. When these low counts were maintained during their infants’ early lives, their salivary counts of S. mutans were also low and they acquired fewer carious lesions than other children of comparable age. When children in the same study became infected with S. mutans before the age of two years, they had approximately eight times as many carious lesions as children in whom S. mutans was not detected until the age of four.

Fluoridation should be a sign of corruption since it is very negative for health as brittle bones and passing the brain blood barrier where it is not wanted as it attracts aluminum which is also not desired in the brain. It makes taking a shower in fluoridated water a very bad idea as well as drinking it.

  4. Eyes Wide Open says

Well I never….funny how many of us non dental professionals have known this for years, and up until now dentists have been claiming that there is a plethora of evidence that flouride reduces dental cavities. Might I be so bold as to suggest that now that the cat is amongst the pigeons that the dental bureaucracy starts looking at and accepting the studies that demonstrate the myriad detrimental affects flouride has on the human organism…..after all this article proves you have nothing to lose now?

  5. parasitism says

Fluoride is mind control that lowers IQ and causes hundreds of health problems that feed the medical monopoly .. we are being farmed to be stupid zombie medical patients who die young…

Also. fluoride is very expensive to treat toxic waste…. why not dump it in the serfs water?

  6. tom bowden says

Was it ever about preventing tooth decay? I thought it was a profitable way to dispose of toxic waste.

  7. AntiLieGuy says

Fluoride was never about tooth decay but poisoning and control. The poisons and government-created diseases are all part of the build-up to Planet X’s return in 2012. Thats what the chemtrails that are sprayed every day globally are hiding. Planet X or Nibiru is also the sign in the heavens warning about Americas total destruction by Russia, China and the SCO. It will happen the same day as the enxt false flag to invade Iran on 10-10-10. News here: http://www.docstoc.com/docs/6519605/WarNews and http://www.xfacts.com

  8. matthew says

Another reason not to have it. The more important reason is that fluoride in the water is forced medication, but people aren’t concerned with that for some reason.

  9. Paddy Sipes says

Not only has research proven that fluoride does nothing to prevent cavities, it has shown that excessive fluoride over time causes teeth to become gray and brittle. Independent research has also proven that fluoride effects the thyroid gland — the master gland that influences the other glands in the brain; this domino effect causes a list of diseases and health problems.
Since doctors & nurses are basically taught by big pharma, don’t look in those areas for the truth, always seek out independent research studies by accredited sources.

  10. Angus MacPherson says

There is no such thing as “healthy doses of fluoride.”
Fluoride is a toxic, industrial waste and often a cover term for 100′s of other toxic chemicals.

The only reason they put this toxic, cumulative poison in our water is to dumb us down, reduce the population and pacify us. This was practiced by the Soviets and later the Nazis.

Naturally occurring fluoride is Calcium Fluoride and it is many, many times less toxic than the chemical industrial waste that is dumped into our water supplies. Don’t ever let some govt. mouthpiece tell you otherwise.

If people want to take fluoride, let them have a choice. Dosing an entire population with a cumulative poison is just what it sounds like.. a crime. And since it’s virtually impossible to filter or purify water to remove fluoride it becomes quite an insidious little weapon.
Ask yourself why those in power have removed our choice to consume this toxin or not. ….

If your water is Fluoridated in your area you MUST NOT go swimming in pools, since fluoride does not evaporate and will concentrate in the water over time as water is added to compensate for evaporation.

  11. Mike says

The communists found fluoride to be great! It made their political prisoners less inclined to fight. No wonder GOVERNMENTS love Fluoride in their peoples water, keeps them lazy and docile. Try it for yourself! Go a few months without it and see how free your mind becomes!

Also the cancer industry loves fluoride, it keeps a steady stream of customers……

  12. Brett says

What this all comes down to is money. We need to get rid of both money and fluoride which would solve so much of our current problems. Evil greeeeeeedy mankind, need to obliterate old systems and embrace our technological advances for free! By the way, I was quite well known for cavities until I moved rural. I didn’t see the dentist for 5 years because all she said was I had 5 new cavities everytime so I stopped. A filling fell out and I went to see a new dentist only to find my teeth were perfect only with abit of placque buildup on the backs from not flossing. She said “whatever your doing, keep doing it”. I personally believe fluoride not only effects our health, but also softens our teeth in some way. Too each his own opinion.

  13. paul says

Fluoride is a by-product of the aluminum industry it should NOT be in the tap water to begin with! it just so happens that chlorine and fluoride are the two main ingredients in sarin nerve gas! dont believe me…go find out for yourself! put a fish in tap water it dies almost instantly…dont you know thats not good for you too? a fish can thrive in the nastiest muddy grossest water yet a minute in tap water its deader than a doornail. doesnt that tell you something?

  14. Randy says

I do not care if any one thinks it (fluoride) is good for me or not. I do not care about the science! I only care that some bastard is deciding for me that I should have it. I distill my water that I drink. a huge inconvenience and still absorb some in the shower. This is a chemical that should be given via a personal distribution system rather than a public distribution system. QUIT MAKING MY DECISIONS and forcing your beliefs down my throat!!!!

  15. Toto says

Fluoride is for lazy parents that don’t want to make their children eat right and brush their teeth. Don’t eat all the processed junk food and all the sugar and stop being lazy. Just brush your god damn teeth! I can’t understand how anyone could justify drinking a chemical when they have no reason to…..it’s insanity.

  16. Rudy says

It looks like most people responding are well researched in the fluoridation issue. Thank you Maureen for that excellent post. The Fluoride Action Network (http://www.fluoridealert.org/) is an excellent resource of information into the dangers of fluoride and fluoridation.

Going back 50-80 or 100 years and comparing to today is unnecessary. Look at what the article says:
“Some researchers argue that the statistics would reveal that both groups of tested children would benefit from fluoridation if fluoridation had advantages.”

Meaning, even if it is pervasive in the food and drink, that the communities that fluoridate should still be statistcally better, and 1% could just be part of the error factor. Basically speaking, there is no benefit and far more dangers.

Also understand that trace amounts of lead and arsenic are found in the fluoridation chemicals. These are very dangerous themselves and they are being fed back into the water supply when we are trying to filter them out. Counter productive if you ask me.

Fluoride was meant to be administered topically, it serves no benefit taken internally. In fact, if you swollow more than a pea sized portion of fluoridated toothpaste, you’re supposed to call poison control. There are warnings right on the tube. Why put it in the water and swallow it? It makes no logical sense!

Consumption of fluoride has been linked to bone loss, thyroid dysfuntion, kidney failure, lower IQ and ADD or ADHD type behavior, even cancer (and more).

Another excellent source of information is a book by Christopher Bryson called “The Fluoride Deception”. Here is a link to an interview with the author http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7319752042352089988#

    Many thanks,

Hans C Moolenburg was responsible for stopping water fluoridation in Holland many years ago and their teeth improved. He said the reason that Western Europe was successful in stopping it was because during the Nazi occupation during the Second World War the people of Europe who were dominated by them knew how it was to be oppressed. He said that at the time the decision was made to stop fluoridation fortunately there were enough survivors of that evil regime to remember what oppression was. He said that those of us who live in the US, Australia, England, Ireland and New Zealand have never felt oppression, don’t recognise it and are therefore easy targets for the oppressors of fluoride. It all makes so much sense to me. Nazi Doctors were hanged at Nuremberg for forcing medication on people. It is illegal in Germany and Holland now to violate the human body with drugs/medicine or poisons.

  19. says

“It is illegal in Germany and Holland now to violate the human body with drugs/medicine or poisons”

You are saying, Peter, that Germany and Holland do not have iodised salt, no vitamins added to bread, no other additives in any food?

  20. G Huyser says

Stuart – I don’t think that’s what he’s saying. Iodine and vitamins do not violate the human body and are not toxins.

I’m against fluoridation, but regarding some of these conspiracy theories –
#1 Some claim Gov’t is forcing Fluorides on us to dumb us down. Where do you think the current leaders of the country came from? They came from us, the public. They drank the water when they were kids. We need smart people for technological advances and to run corporations and the country. So the Gov’t would not want to make everybody dumb. Unless you’re going to come up with a conspiracy theory that they preselect which children will grow up to be our leaders and send their parents secret letters telling them “Psst! Don’t let Johnny drink the water and we’ll make him President one day”.

#2 Some claim Gov’t is trying to control the population. Actually they want increased population. They get money from taxes. The more people – the more taxes. This is why we can’t get Gov’t to control immigration. We have known since the 1970′s that we don’t have the resources to support our ever-increasing population and there used to be a push for Zero Population Growth. But since those days people seem to have forgotten about that. Well, that’s a whole ‘nother argument…so I’ll quit now.

  21. Y says

Stuart: lead, arsenic, mercury, uranium and plutonium are natural elements. “Natural” does not equal safe and desirable in drinking water.

Please see this video to find out how fluoridation came about: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2886269353175462948#

Learn about the chemistry of fluoride. Fluoride is derived from fluorine, the most reactive element on the planet, and is a highly electronegative ion which readily binds or replaces atoms in molecules. Cellular actions of fluoride include: interference with oxygen metabolism, induction of oxygen radicals and depletion of antioxidants, inhibition and activation of numerous enzymes, disruption of cell signalling pathways, collagen breakdown, and disruption of immune function. (Chouhan S, Flora SJ. Effects of fluoride on the tissue oxidative stress and apoptosis in rats: Biochemical assays supported by IR spectroscopy data. Toxicology. 2008 Dec 5;254(1-2):61-7.)

Fluoride breaks hydrogen bonds, disturbs DNA and RNA synthesis, increases DNA replication error, and alters normal DNA structure. (Wang J, Geb Y, Ning H, Niu R. Chapter 67 – DNA damage in brain and thyroid gland cells due to high fluoride and low iodine. Comprehensive Handbook of Iodine; 2009. p. 643-9.)

This broad cytotoxicity is the reason fluoride is classed as a general protoplasmic poison, and used as an active ingredient in pesticides such as cryolite.

“Fluorides are general protoplasmic poisons, probably because of their capacity to modify the metabolism of cells by changing the permeability of the cell membrane and by inhibiting certain enzyme systems. The exact mechanism of such actions is obscure. The sources of fluorine intoxication are drinking water containing 1 part per million or more of fluorine, fluorine compounds used as insecticidal sprays for fruits and vegetables (cryolite and barium fluosilicate) and the mining and conversion of phosphate rock to superphosphate, which is used as fertilizer.” – Journal of the American Medical Association. 1943;123(3):150-1.

Fluoride is a persistent bioaccumulator. ~50% of each ingested amount is retained in the body; more if renal function is impaired. Accumulation with on-going ingestion is linear and not homeostatically controlled; the body has limited means of countering excess.

Fluoride’s acute toxicity is ranked above lead and just below arsenic, and all three exert toxic effects with long-term chronic exposure. The maximum acceptable level for lead and arsenic in water is accordingly low: 10 ppb. Fluoride, in contrast, is “topped up” to 1000 ppb, a hundred times higher. Further, people’s fluoride intake from water, and food and beverages processed with fluoridated water, is left uncontrolled. Control is impossible, in fact, as fluoride is omitted from product ingredient lists. Fluoridation leads to the widespread consumption of a cumulative cytotoxin at unregulated doses. No doctor would prescribe such a substance to you and say, “Take as much as you want, as often as you want, regardless of any health conditions you have or any other drugs you’re taking.” Fluoridation completely violates pharmacological principles and sound medical practice.

Fluoride is not a nutrient. It is not required for any known cell function. This distinguishes it from iodine and vitamin A, which are essential to physiological function. With iodised salt and other fortified products, people can 1) easily control their intake and 2) purchase non-fortified alternatives with little inconvenience or extra cost. Fluoridated water is often prohibitively expensive and difficult to avoid. Is it right to force people to pay to avoid medical treatment?

Medical treatment is indeed what fluoridation is, as the purpose is to “reduce dental caries”. This distinguishes it from chlorination: chlorine is added to kill bacteria, to treat the water and make it safe for humans to drink; fluoride is added to treats the human, to cause a physiological change in the consumer. As with all medical interventions, each patient should have the right to refuse and withdraw from treatment at will. This is patient autonomy, one of the pillars of modern medical ethics. If I – having never met you, never evaluated your health and existing medical conditions/allergies, and never calculated your drinking water intake – decided that you and your family should have penicillin in your drinking water at a concentration of my choosing, would you object?

The global decline in dental caries is better attributed to improved nutrition, sanitation, and toothpaste. Fluoride’s anti-caries effect on teeth is topical; fluoroapatite formation when fluoride is in direct contact with teeth increases the tooth’s resistance to acid attack. Systemic fluoride – fluoride in your blood – confers no significant anti-caries benefit. In fact, systemic fluoride damages ameloblasts, leading to dental fluorosis. There’s no good reason to swallow it. (Pizzo G, Piscopo MR, Pizzo I, Giuliana G. Community water fluoridation and caries

I have resolved toothache within minutes of swishing Colloidal Silver into the area of the mouth where pain is felt. Bacteria causes infection which results in pain… .I believe the antibacterial properties of Silver assist in this regard. As a mouthwash it collects bacterial mucous…you can feel it collecting in a clump. I have to wonder could this simple remedy be the most effective treatment when it comes to dental and oral problems caused by bacteria.

Victoria, “most effective treatment when it comes to dental and oral problems caused by bacteria” is prevention.

Floss thoroughly, then brush with a soft brush & fluoride paste, after each meal.

No food for bacteria – no bacteria – no decay.

Wow! These are the best comments I have seen, particualrly those of Maureen Jones. Thank you.

Fluoridation not only causes cancer, brittle bones, lowered IQ, etc., (see http://www.fluoridealert.org) but is an absolute waste of tax money. People drink only 1/2% (one-half percent) of the water they use. The remaining 99 ½ % of this toxic chemical is dumped directly into our environment.

For example, for every $1000 of fluoride chemical added to water, $995 would be directly wasted down the drain in toilets, showers, dishwashers, etc., $5 would be consumed in water by the people, and less than $0.50 (fifty cents) would be consumed by children, the target group. If you doubt any of this, check with your water department.

That would be comparable to taking 1 gallon of milk, using six-and-one-half drops of it, and pouring the rest of the gallon in the sink.

Can you think of a more wasteful government program? Giving away fluoride tablets free to anyone who wants them would be far cheaper and certainly more ethical because then we would have the freedom to choose.

An even better plan may be to purchase one tanker truck of this toxic waste fluoride (Hexafluorosilicic acid, which is waste material flushed directly from industrial smokestacks) for a few dollars and instead of putting it in drinking water, park the truck at city hall and give out fluoride free to anyone who wants it. When 99 1/2% of this poison is no longer wasted down the drain in showers, toilets, dishwashers, etc., one truck would probably last 5 to 10 years or more.

Then use all of the $ millions in savings to help the community.
