Free Dental Work Offered for Needy Children and Adults
April 29th, 2009Dominican clinic offers free dental care to needy families
SANTA CRUZ — More than 60 families with infants have been seen by a dentist this year, thanks to the Dominican Pediatric Clinic.
The clinic serves low-income and high-risk infants and children.
Parents get an hour of classroom-style education, followed by an exam for their child, fluoride application and referrals to local dentists if necessary for treatment.
“The idea is to provide a dental home and oral-health education to parents so we can prevent oral health disease and reduce the prevalence of early childhood decay,” said Dr. David Okuji, who provides dental care at the clinic.

Early birds show up for free dental care in Sun City
More than 150 people stood outside of Dr. Patrick Carr’s office Saturday morning at Sun City Dental Care to receive free dental care.
The dentist and his staff provided emergency treatment for any person who needed it, ranging from fillings to root canals. Vicki Durfee, office manager for Carr, said people started arriving as early as 5 a.m. for the free clinic that lasted from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Carr said he never had a free clinic before, but chose to because of the hard economic times.
“People who need help with dental care are vastly under served,” he said. “Dental care is a basic need but expensive at the same time and many can’t fit it into their budgets.”
