Creighton University is taking a bite out of hard times and offering struggling families a service that will leave them grinning ear to ear.
The weird noises from a dentist’s office make it sometimes hard to get anyone excited about going to the dentist.
However today, parents dragged their kids out of bed to get the dental care they desperately need during a time when many families cannot afford the service.
“I said free, free dental, free dental is pretty good because things are going up now-a-days and people want what’s best for their kids,” said Christina Evans, a parent who brought her kids to the dentist.
Volunteers Give Free Dental Care to Hundreds of Kids

As the economy plummets, more uninsured children are left to suffer through it. Cavities in preschoolers are up for the first time in 50 years.
“It’s a little heartbreaking, to know that you have these children that are coming in, and you’re going to see them, and you’re going to do what you can for them,” said one volunteer nurse. “After that, where are they going to go?”
No dental insurance? No problem
Dentists and hygienists around Minnesota are giving free care to thousands of kids who don’t have insurance.
Four-year-old Avril Garcia played in the waiting room of a dental clinic she’d never visited before Friday as her parents waited for a volunteer to call her name.
“Two years ago I had to cancel my insurance because of the economy,” said Garcia, of Brooklyn Park. “This is why we came.”
The program, called “Give Kids a Smile,” is sponsored by the American Dental Association. Dentists and dental hygienists across the country volunteered their time Friday and again today to treat uninsured children. The Minnesota Dental Association expected nearly 5,000 children to get free treatment across the state. Parents arranged appointments by calling a help line set up by the United Way or by contacting clinics directly.
Free dental-care event in Eagan gives needy children a reason to smile
After housing, food and school supplies, there’s one expense that Susana Bustamente never has quite enough money to cover: dental care for her children.
Bustamente, a cook at an Apple Valley restaurant, brought her three kids to Eagan Valley Dental on Friday during the two-day “Give Kids a Smile” event, an annual tradition of the Minnesota Dental Association.
Across the state, some 450 dentists and about 2,000 dental hygienists, interpreters and office staff volunteered Friday to clean teeth and fill cavities for low-income kids. Many of the 206 dental offices will participate again today.
The donated time and labor is equivalent to about $1.7 million in free services and will benefit 5,000 children, said Dick Diercks, executive director of the dental association.
