So many of us stretch the recommended six months between visits to our dentist due to busy schedules, tight budgets, a lack of concern about the health implications or fear. A nice smile often is the by-product of routine dental care, but the top benefit of maintaining oral health is good health overall.

Research shows that several types of cardiovascular disease may be linked to oral health. And dental decay is the most common chronic disease affecting children.

Two years ago, Assembly Republicans approved a $7 million increase in dental reimbursement, but it was not included in the final version of the state budget.

Free dental care offered

Newport Beach periodontist John Chrispens hopes to take some of the bite out of the down economy by offering free dental care this weekend.

He’s giving away his services to whoever shows up to his office between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday.

It’s Chrispens’ way of helping people out who might not otherwise be able to afford dental care, he said.

“We were looking around to see ways we can make a difference and how we can help as a dental team,” Chrispens said.

When the economy goes south, people’s teeth suffer, he said.
