Free dental clinic draws hundreds

People often drag their feet when it comes to visiting the dentist. But that wasn’t the case in Papillion on Friday.

More than two dozen people camped out overnight Thursday outside Papillion-La Vista South High School to be first in line for free dental care Friday morning. The service was offered from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and will be provided the same time today at the school, 10799 Highway 370.

When: Saturday
Time: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: Papillion-LaVista South High School, 10799 Highway 370

Services include: Teething cleanings, fillings, root canals, X-rays

Who qualifies: Intended for low-income people and those without insurance. For adults and children.

What to bring: Just an ID. Don’t need to bring proof of income or insurance status.

More than 800 people were treated Friday with patients driving from as far as three hours away to get care. One patient came from Kansas.

About 140 dentists volunteered their time, said Dr. Brett Thomsen, an organizer. The clinic, sponsored by the Nebraska Dental Association and Nebraska Dental Foundation, was aimed at low-income people and those without insurance. It’s open to children and adults. Childcare is available.

More Utahns on Medicaid lose dental coverage

Amy and Edwin Benson carry plastic flossers in their pockets to keep food from settling in the holes in their teeth. With several untreated cavities each — and no dental benefits to cover the fillings they need — they’re doing their best to prevent a nasty infection.

With the recession in full swing, the clinic has seen its caseload nearly double since August, Jensen said. That, coupled with the July 1 Medicaid cuts, prompted it to start a new discounted dental program two weeks ago for people who live at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Instead of participating in the lottery, they can make an appointment to be seen Monday through Wednesday for services offered at a significantly reduced fee.
