Free Dental Care for Kids and Seniors
December 28th, 2009Senate health care bill also has benefits for Florida seniors
The Senate’s version of health care reform approved Thursday has a provision to protect Florida seniors from losing a rich benefit package they have as members of Medicare Advantage Plans.
The plans in South Florida use this extra money in many cases to offer customers zero co-payments for doctor visits, little or no costs for drugs, or free dental and vision coverage. Such benefits would be endangered or outright eliminated if Congress reduced HMO rates.

Statewide Free Dental Program for Kids
NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ - The New Jersey Dental Association (NJDA) will host the national Give Kids a Smile! (GKAS) Children’s Dental Access Day for the 8th year on Friday, February 5, 2010, at more than 80 participating locations around the state. On this day, thousands of children 12 and under will have access to free dental care at any of the participating locations, and it couldn’t happen at a more crucial time.
Statistics from the American Dental Association show that more than 51 million school hours are lost each year because of dental pain. About one third of all children in the United States have no dental insurance, and uninsured children are 2.5 times less likely to receive dental care then insured children. In addition, tooth decay (cavities) is the #1 chronic childhood disease in America, five times more prevalent than asthma and 12 times for prevalent than juvenile diabetes. The good news is that with good oral hygiene, a healthy diet and consistent visits to the dentist, tooth decay is preventable.

For WestConn student, dental hygiene easier to spread in Africa than Danbury
DANBURY — It’s easier to promote proper dental care in an African island country than at home in Danbury, according to a Western Connecticut State University pre-dental student.
Brittany Fignar, a junior biology major, traveled to Cape Verde, Africa, in March to give dental lessons to impoverished children.
She collected 250 sets of toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss from doctors’ offices in the area and created lesson plans to teach children the basics of dental hygiene.
“Many people don’t have access because of language barriers, or because they aren’t legal citizens. I am assuming throughout her career she will do some amount of free dental care.”

Durham College offers cheap dental care
DURHAM — The poor economy may be putting a bite on dental care for some, but Durham College may be able to bridge the gap.
Durham College’s dental clinic provides a full scope of hygiene services and examinations for a nominal fee of $25 for adults and $10 for children.
The dental hygiene clinics run from September to April and provide a complete examination which looks for things including oral cancer, and provides fluoride treatments, cleaning, oral hygiene instruction, nutrition counselling, pit and fissure sealant, quit-smoking help, fittings for custom sports mouth guards, X-rays, and laser treatments for gum disease. Appointments tend to slow down in January, making it a good month to get in quicker, Ms. Burke said.
