Should Canada have Free Basic Dental Care?

Yet Canada, with its incredible free health care system, does not yet have free dental care for Canadian citizens. Thus unless you have a dental plan at the place you work, getting dental care is going to be pretty expensive and simply not possible for many impoverished Canadians.

Canada does have free basic dental care for children and seniors, but adults are vastly ignored by the system. (Native Canadians also get free basic dental care, as do wards of the state.)

The University of Bridgeport’s Fones School of Dental Hygiene has opened a dental clinic at Jettie Tisdale Elementary School in Bridgeport.

The clinic, funded with a $50,000 grant from the state Department of Social Services, will provide free dental checkups to all 650 Tisdale students by the end of the school year in June.

Children with severe dental issues receive additional checkups every two to three months, and also may be referred to local dentists for more extensive treatments.

Free dental clinic for the uninsured canceled due to lack of dentists

A shortage of volunteer dentists led a national group to cancel plans for major, free health clinic for the uninsured at the South Florida Fairgrounds in West Palm Beach, organizers said this week.

Boca Raton cancer survivor Steve Kaplan had enlisted Remote Area Medical to help run and supply the clinic on April 10 and 11. It was expected to attract 2,000 uninsured people. But RAM canceled the event Monday saying too few Florida dentists had signed up and dental care is the biggest draw at its events. Founder Stan Brock said he was “disappointed” that Gov. Charlie Crist did not allow RAM to bring in volunteer medical professionals from out of state.
