Dentists band together for day of free care

PITTSFIELD — When a group of dentists and oral surgeons gathered last year to offer a day of free care, the crowd of patients began lining up at 5:30 a.m. and nearly 200 adults were treated. This year, the doctors hope to treat even more.

On May 2, Oral Surgery Associates at 3 Dalton Ave. will host the day of free care, organized by Project 31, an organization established by the International Team of Implantololgy to help adults who don’t have access to dental care.

Dentist gives free dental treatment to needy

Norwich, Conn. — This week is National Volunteer Week and there may be no better example than Dr. Linda R. Kronick.

Kronick provided free dentistry for four hours Tuesday to financially distressed and homeless people. Reflecting a noble spirit, Kronick said she wasn’t aware of volunteer week, run by the Points of Light Institute of Atlanta and Washington.

“I just thought it would be nice thing to do,” Kronick, a Norwich native and Niantic resident, said from her office at 77 Salem Turnpike.

About 1 million people statewide are in need of dental care, said Kristy-Lee Downer, communications coordinator for the Connecticut State Dental Association. Downer was at Kronick’s office Tuesday.

Free dental care clinic

New Haven (WTNH) — Hundreds of people lined up early in the morning in New Haven for a chance to see a dentist for free.

“We’re serving 2,000 to 2,400 people in the next 48 hours,” said Dr. Richmond Hung, president of the New Haven chapter of the Connecticut Mission of Mercy . “That’s a phenomenal number of people.”

About one million people lack access to dental care in the state. Poor dental health can lead to all kinds of medical complications, and in extreme cases oral infections can spread to other parts of the body and even lead to death.

The Mission of Mercy wants to prevent these types of outcomes with their free dental care clinic, which is said to be the only large scale clinic of its type in the state.
