The International College of Dentists honored Dr. Jeremiah Lowney, Jr., a practicing orthodontist in Norwich, CT, with the 2010 District One Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Lowney, was recognized for his philanthropic dental work in Haiti, having founded the Haitian Health Foundation in 1982.

“I’m honored to have received the distinguished service award,” said Dr. Lowney. “The situation in Haiti is one you cannot even begin to describe.

People die from dental diseases – coming to me in lots of pain. I’m pleased the Haitian Health Foundation is able to help these people with not only extractions, but also restorative dentistry – as well as medical services and preventive care.”

Dr. Lowney was recognized during a luncheon hosted by the International College of Dentists, which took place at Yankee Dental Congress in Boston, MA.

Dr. Lowney’s interest in Haiti began with a trip to Port au Prince during which he provided free dental care to the poor.

Following the experience, Dr. Lowney founded the Haitian Health Foundation, with the mission to “improve the health and well being of the poor, sick, and the infirm of the greater Jérémie area.”

Over the past twenty-eight years the Foundation has grown tremendously, and today Dr. Lowney’s generosity and compassion for the people of Haiti has grown into an outpatient health care facility providing all types of health services and other everyday necessities to those living in the poorest, rural mountain villages of Haiti.

With the earthquake and aftershocks devastating Haiti, more Haitians than ever now need health care assistance.
