Canadian Dental Hygienists Offer Free Dental Care “Gift from the Heart”

For the third consecutive year registered dental hygienists all across Ontario, Canada will be giving a different type of gift this Valentine’s weekend – free dental care.

On Saturday February 12, 2011, registered dental hygienists across the province will open their hearts and dental clinics to provide free dental health care to the public who may be financially unable to receive dental hygiene care or who have difficulty accessing dental hygiene treatment.

“Gift from the Heart” is a one-day volunteer free dental event to bring public awareness to the overwhelming number of Ontarian’s unable to afford oral health care”, says Founder, and Independent Dental Hygienist, Bev Woods.

It is also a day to bring awareness to the public that oral health comprises more than just teeth and gum care, and is the key to your overall health.

“A Gift from the Heart” is open to families ages four to 18 who are financially unable to receive oral care or who have difficulty accessing dental hygiene treatment.

“Your dental hygienist is the expert for preventive oral health care” says the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario President, Linda Jamieson. (Milestones December 2009)

The Gift from the Heart is a day set aside for dental hygienists all across Ontario to educate everyone on the link between oral health and overall health. Good overall health starts in the mouth. Research studies have shown a relationship between the health of one’s mouth and the health of the body.

It is also a day to demonstrate to Ontario Stakeholders just how many people go without oral health care. Most of them are uninsured. Dental insurance coverage disappears when you’re laid off, retire or are divorced.

Throughout the Canadian province of Ontario there are numerous dental hygienists opening their doors for this special one day free dental care event.

Since September 2007 dental hygienists have been legislated to provide free dental hygiene care outside the traditional dental office which enables the public the right to choose their healthcare provider.

“Every year I want to have more dental volunteers that the year before and be able to reach further and provide more care that the previous year”.

There are over 50 Independent dental hygiene clinics offering free dental hygiene care on the Feb. 12/11 in Canada.
